The assessors commenced the work of assessment in March last, but theirs is only a commencement of the work. ‘Their duty ts but to [nice upon the value of ground per foot, This is but a commencement of Teal work. The books of the office have to be re-written, which involves the labor of ascertaio- ing the names of the owners of all lots or subdi- vistons of lots of ground in the District of Co:um- Dia; the number of square feet of each lot, the value of improvements thereon, &., which have to be written out in detail, proved by records and dupltcated. Lawrence Miller, a young German, and hig sister, Frelerica Miller, came to the Police Court to-day to swear out a warrant against a young man named Wm. Hoffman, for making a deadly assault on them last night with aknife. The young woman had her head enveloped in bandages, and Dr. Marstellar was present to give evidence as to the nature of the injuries.
