Ww ASHINGTOD TIONDAY August 20, 1SS3- “CROSBY S. NOVES... Ediior. be Evening Star has a regular. permanent dena fide daily circatation more thar trevic that of any other daiiv paper While bossism is at a discount everywhere else, and the machine system of politics 1s condemned, these methods seem to be particularly dear to the people of Cincinnati. At the recent democratic coanty convention the issue against Senator Pen- dieton and civil service reform was squarely Taised. The objections to Pendleton were that he had been instrumental In securing reform legisla- tion, and that, besides, he had fed long enough at the public crib. “He has had enough of a good thing,” as the men who led the opposition to him rudely put it. This sort of arguments and the machine work together prevailed, as Pendleton ‘was completely overslaughed. His re-election as Senator, even should the democrats carry the leg- islature, {s now out of the question. It{s stated, and apparently without any effort at conceal- ment, that McLean, the antl-Pendleton boss, and Hoadiy had an understanding to the effect that if Hoadly woutd keep his “hands off” while McLean slaughtered Pendleton, the much-desired support of the Enquirer for the democratic nomince for governor would be accorded. What eff-ct this sort of trading against Pendleton will have upon the coming state election remains to be seen; but it is fair to assume that the enthusiasm of the Pendleton men for the ticket will not be increased. | The victory of the bosses lias emboldened them to hint that the coming republican county conven- tion 1s to be controlled by much the same meth- | ods. It seems that certain politicians of Cincin- | nati of beth parties have schemes and ambitions | to carry out, and they propose to make sure of | them, no matter which party wins They have made a combination for the purpose of cortrolling the nominations of both parties In their interest, and then, whether republicans or democrats lose, the clique of bosses will win, $+» —_____ ‘The improvement in the condition of Judge Black, which so raised the hopes of his friends, proved to be but temporary and Ilustve.
