How THE SEVEX M3” came To LEAVE rene the fe%eD Taen, who left the Western nion of %o.day, had been escorted to the NAtiGD-; notel a special sesston of the brotherhood 1 as held and they were initiated as members in the midst of much enthustasm, “ We were discharged,” sald One of these oper- ators, “but discharged Because we were about to leave'the office.” The situation of these operators, as detafled by them toa STAR reporter, was as ‘follows: When the strike occurred ten good operators remained 1n the Western Union office. These seven were con- servative men, and refrained from striking because they thought the company ought to have a chance to investigate the grievances complained of. When & sub-committee was appointed to Investigate these grievances the seven operators signed an agreement to quit work If the committee did not take some notice of complaints. The fact of this agreement having been published Superinten- dent Zueblin came here and pleaded with them collectively and individually to withdraw their names from it. Bulletins having been in the office, offering largely increasnd pay for extra work, the'seven men construed it as a bribe and an Insult to their honor, they declined to annul the ent. It was known that they were to leave ‘at 12 o'clock to-day. At 20 minutes to 12 o'clock Superintendent Zueblin sent for them to come to a private room. He asked them if they Proposed to abide by the agreement, and upon Fecelulng an affirmative reply from each and all, Instructed Mr. Whitney to discharge them per- emptorily. He accused them of befig traitors to the company, and also with having bungled work. ‘One of the seven sald that they would be traitors to honor tf they now refused to live up to the Terms of their agreement. Some of these men have been twenty years in the service of the com- pany. The youngest of them has been with the company nine years. Operators say that they have always been entrusted with work requiring the greatest skill. Maddox, who is named as one of the seven operators who left the office to-tay, did not, the operators say, sign the nt. He did not leave the’ office to-day. ‘The seventh signer of the paper belongs to the night force, A CHARGE OF MUTILATING DISPATCHES DENIED. (Signt HAS. INKER, pany: Cignet _coneral buporintenient ‘The men who were discharced indignantly de- nied that there 1s any truth in the charge of Su- perintendent Zeublin that they have mutilated the business passing through their hands. They say that the fact that they were urged by Mr. Zeuplin up to the moment of their dismissal to withdraw from the agreement is evidence that the charge 1s wholly groundless. Mr. Zeublin has removed his headquarters to Washington “ tor the war.” MANAGER WHITNEY AND SUPERINTENDENT ZEUBLIN: ‘were both at the Western Union office in this city to-day. They spent their time on the Mfth floor of the bullding, in the operators’ room, where they were inaccessible to the general public. A Stak reporter made the ascent to the fitth story this afternoon, and caught sight, through the Iit- tle glass slide in the operators’ room, of a generous lunch being prepared for the remaining operators. Manager Whitney was called for by the 5 and came to the door. “You can learn just as much about this matter,” he said, “on the outside as you can from me. All I know is that seven men have gone out. Wehve taken in aixnew men, 80 we have about the same force.” “There is a report on the street,” said the re- porter, “that the Western Union company claim to have discharged these men for being unfaith- ful” “Tcan say nothing about these men,” said Mr. Whitney. “You must ask them if you want to know why they lett” The men now at work in the Western Union will, 1t ts understood, be not only fed but lod in the rooms adjoining the operators’ room, so’ the strikers will have no opportunity to talk with them. In response to an inquiry from the Associated Press office a3 to the condition in which the exo- dus has left the Washington office, Superintendent Z-ublin made the following reply in writing: “With exactly the same number of men, who arrived from Philaieiphia, Harrisburg and Ches- ter, Pa., last night, with four more en route. We now have the office fully equipped with gilt. first-class, loyal and enthusiastic operators. business will no longer be Intentionally mangled and errors willtully caused by traitorous em- ployes, J. To-day the board of equalization and appeals took up the Cottrell resolution, under discussion the past two days, reducing assessments in his district about half a million of dollars. A long and warin discussion followed, Mr. Cottrell defending his action on the basis of right and Justice, and the others combating him. Mr. Carpenter sald he had been studying over the state of affairs, and had come to the conclusion that the best way to get Yr the difiiculty was to adopt a resolution which he then offered, the effect of witch was to restore the assess- ments made by Mr. Cottrell to their original figures on the property of Gen.
