Dur- ing the past two years my sufferings at times wore dreadful, and I had the most indescribable pains in the regions about the kidneys, the paroxysms of which ‘Were eo severe as to render itimpossible for me tosleep. While in this deplorable and discouraged condition I ‘was persuaded to try Hunts Remedy, and aftor using Jess than half a bottle my great sufferings and parox- yeme of pain were entirely relieved, and I could sleep better and longer than 1 nad in two years before, and although Iam now on my third bottle only, my im- Provementis very temarkable, and I recret that I did not know of the wonderful curative powers of Hunt's Remedy before, an it would have saved me years of suf- fering. I heartily recommenait to all afflicted with any Kidney disease or disease of the urinary organs.” “HIT MY CASE EXACTLY.” Please allow moto speak in the highest terms of “‘Hunv's Remedy,” for it bit my case exactly. I had kidney and urinary trouble pretty bad. I was recom- mended Hunt's Remedy. I took one teaspoonful as ai- Feoted. I felt a decided change at the first dose. A Sram reporter to-day called upon Commis. stoner West for hts views on the question or policy of mixed schools. The Commissioner answered: “In the interest of both races I deprecate raising the question of mixed schools. The prejudice of face exists now; It 1s palpable—undenlabie, It may be dissipated by time and circumstances; but At ts not wise to ignore tts existence in all its force to-day, and by precipitate and Ill-advised meas- Ures, contrary to that prejudice, to Jeopardize the education of the weaker race and deprive them of the only advantage by which they can ever ex- pect to cope with thestronger. When you put the educational facilities of the Wack man in danger, you shackle bis lmbs again’ in the race of lire. Education 1s not only a necessity tor him in his strife for position with the white man, but it helps him to a soctal standing potnt that he will never attain without it. The muscles and capacity of a racer if tried toc soon will break him down in his course. Don’t force the black child’s running by putting him in the field with white children uotil the latter shall have been educated to think him their equal in all respects. Practical statesman- sbip secures what 1t can towards an end without premature striving for the momentary impractl- cable.” UPON THE SUFFRAGE QUESTION. ‘The reporter next asked Gen. West for his views upon District suffrage. He replied that if he could be guaranteed five years existence for the Present government he would say let us take it and be satisfied. “But,” he added, “unless public sentiment here crystalizes we are going to be hurt. The recent interviews in THE SraR show the dissatisfaction of the people. The democrats in Congress are going to win control of the gov- ernment by any means if they can, and they will not hesitate to injure the District tf they can gain anything by it. The civil service bill divorces government clerks from their allegiance to Con- gressmen and their former homes, We can make them vot-rs with ourselves, and thus overcome the bad element in politica I have suggested a board of five Commiasioners, three to be elected by the people and two apppotnted by the President. I would confer upon that board muntelpal legisla- tive power. I mean power over the health, police and other municipal departments; power to re- move a nu/sence when it exists without waiting for authority from Con; I would define the duties of each member w, giving one super- ‘vViston of the police, another of health depart- ment, another of ‘public institutions and so on, and authorize the board to enact ordinances for tho muntetpal regulation of the city. | The dent I would have elected by the people.” In suggesting this change Gen. West said he had no axe to grind, no personal obj ‘to gain, He believed it would subserve public interests. He said he would form this government so as not to interfere with existing financial regulations or Jeopardize the eae of half the public ex- penses by the United States, Crvit SeRviog at THE Crry Post OFFI0.—No ap- plications have yet been filed for the examina- tions to be held next Thursday for filling vacan- cles that may occur in the city post Office.
