Having told the story of that terrible mental struggle in his earlier years, which ended {n his abandoning or thodox in religion, the late Thomas Carlyle ended with these words: “Yes, I was shut up in my room in that way for weeks, eating little, and that at all sorts of odd times, and when I settled the faith question, and came out to the world again, for the first time in my life I was con- scious of possessing such an infernal apparatus asa stomach,” It may be added that during the rest of his long life chronic dyspepsia kept the fact of the exist- ence of his stomach perpetually in the great man’s mind, Disordered digestion and a torbid liver handicap multitudes of people in life's race, They are beaten everywhere. With the liver engorzed with blood and their brain fuddle 1 through lack of nutrition, they pass through the world like them that dream. Thus en- feebdled and fiacid in spirit and body they are the first to fall before the touch of an epidemic, or to yield to any illness. Many a vacant chair in editorial rooms, in business offices and in the studies of literary men tells this tale. Nature's own stimulus for a sluggish circulation of the blood is BENSON'S CAPCINE POROUS PLAS- TER. It stirs the dull organs into activity, relieves them from the poisonous matter which paralyses their powers, and renders life real again, and imparts snap and vigor to the man. Without being harmful, the old“style plasters are always slow, weak and uncertain, but Benson’s Capcine acts quickly and heals at once. Lieut. Austin’s men | LETTER FROM CAPE MAY. The Musical Festival—The Rifles Visit —The BRegatta—Pereonal, Etc. Special Correspondence of the Evenrxa Stan. Care May, July 13, 1888. The great event of the week at the Stockton will bethe third and fourth concerts of the series by the Germanta Orchestra. Those given on Sunday Isst were so beyond the ordinary entertsinments of the kind, that a lively but pleasurable anxlety ig felt to listen again to the magnificant mnsic, selected by Mr. Schmitz from famous masters like Auber, Mendelsshon, Weber, Rossini, Wagner, Haydn, and others of iike genius and name. ‘These concerts were of a grade that would have honored the Academy of Music with two dollars a8 the price of admission, while the distingusped assistance of Mile. Zeliede Luasan, Signor Fer- Tantl/and other, well-known. professionals, gave to the performances a still higher character. ‘The orchestra stepped at once into deserved popu- larity, and when they again enter the pavilion they will meet a still ietaee and equally apprecia- tive audience. Thegrand hop to-night, directed by Prof. Loomis will be preceded and followed by brief concerts by the orchestra, assisted by Simon Has+ler’s celebrated organization, which, by the way, has been increased to thirty pleces: ‘On Sat- urday and Sunday of next week, the 2ist and 221, the first of the great mustcal festivals will be held at the Stockton, and the Island will witness an- other of those triumphs which graced the festi- vals of last year. With its extensions, the pavil- ton will be ample to accommodate an orchestra of over one hundred plecesand achorusof three hun, dred to four hundred volces, while the broad auil- torium and verandas will seat an audience of five thousand people. Music appears tobe not only a favorite enter- tainment this seasen, but ts demanded by the summer visitors, and they will have none but the best. The efforts, therefore, made by Col. Cake to supply this demand for pleasure and entertatn- ment Is heartily commended, and a thousand good wishes for his success ate dally expressed. ‘THE RIFLES VISIT. Sunday morning the Rifles from Washing- ton arrive at Congress Hall for a ten days stay, and their visit, from the pro- gram laid out, will be a continous round of pleas- ure and amusement. Mr. George Crump, who manages Congress, while hts brother presides over the Devon Inn, proposes the Rifles shall haye a good time, and Col. Duffy, of the new Columbia, and Col. Cake, of the Stockton, are of the same mind, for ail these gentlemen have each tendered areception to them, while on Saturday evening a grand ball will be’ given in thelr honor at Con- gress Hall. The reception committee on this occa— sion will consist of Gen. Sewell, Hon. M. Hall Stanton, C. S. Magrath, George Crump, Col. Cake, W. W. Johnson, Col. Duffy, J. R. Wood, Col. Hos- singer and W. & Roose. The floor committee are Messrs. Geo. R. Crump, W. West Dryden, F. D. Rogers, H. S. Avery, jr., J. S. McCartney, Geo. Boyd, G. N. Caleb, Prof. Loomis and Chas. Duffy, Jr.” It will be a very brilliant affair. THE REGATTA, ‘The first regatta of the season came off this morning, a dozen or more of the Cape May yachts entering for the race and prizes, The start was from Sewall’s Point, the course sailed being down the beach frontand around Epps’ buoy and the finish Just off the Stockton. It was a spirited con- fest and attracted large crowds to the plers and beach. As I must mail this now, the names of the winning vessels cannot be given. MRS, LANGTRY. The most notable arrival thus far this season 1s, Mrs. Langtry, the Jersey beauty and goddess of Freddie's devotion. She stops at the Stockton, and is watched with admiring and eritical eyes. She arrived from Atlantic City to-day and remains over Sunday. FOOD FISHING. The Senate sub-committee of the committee on foreign relations are in session here at Congress hall, examining witnesses respecting the damage done to our shore fishing by those engaged in menhaden fishing. Senator Sewell introduced the bill last year, Senate No. 128, to protect food fish from these depredations, and being referred to foreign relations thissub-committee was appointed to examige into the matter and report thereon, ‘They go fom here to Atlantle City and thence to other potuts on the coast. Senators Lapham, chatr- man, with Call and Morgan, are the members present. Col. McDonald, representing the U. 8° fish commission, accompanies them. Charles B. Lapbam 1g secrétary, E. T.
