WHAT HAS COME OF AN ERROR MADE IN PRINTING A * LETTER. The New York Tribune to-day published a dis- patch from Washington stating that it 1s expected that the Postmaster General will make some care- ful inquiries to ascertain, if practtcable, whether any of the present subordinate officers of his de- partment have been derelict in their official duties in respect to the lotterycompantex. The dispatch says that some color of probability ts given to ru- mors that the late Postmaster General was de- ceived by subordinates respecting the legal status of the Louisiana lottery company by the fact that in the Correspondence between, Postinaster General Howe and Representative Robertson, of Louistana, last year, two letters from the Post A Office department contained what purported to be a citation of section 3,894 of the Revise Statutes. ‘The first words of this section were quoted as fol- lows: “No letter or circular concerning ileal 10t- terles, so-called gift concerts,” &c., although that entities ace since July 12, 1876, contained the word “tilegal.”” A reporter of THE STAR was to-day shown both the record book and the copy book containing the letter above referred to, and saw that the word “Illegal” was enclosed in brackets, just as it 1s in the statute which was quoted. The letter, as printed in the Congreasional omits the brackets and leaves the word “illegal” standing as a part Of the statute. The reason that it is printed in the sore see tretaes oor eee oe ing all ant word was for erly in the statute. —————+e- —____ PsooRess QF WORK ON THE PENSION BUILDING. Gon. M. C.
