Carcaao, July 9.—The Eptscopal church contro- versy which has grown outor the high church tendencies of Arthur Riteble, pastor of the Church Of the Ascension, and which has already served to raw out a letter of protest from the bishop of this diocese, had another sensational feature added to Ityesterusy. Rector Ritchie at the morning ser- vice announced that at the conclusion of the service a requiem mass would be sald for the soul of Daniel Fountain, who was drowned in Lake “Michigan tn the latter part of May. The announce- ment Of the requiem mass was apparently such a pronounced step toward Romantsm as to cause even the parishloners of the Chureh of the Asccn- sion to rebel who had hitherto stood by the pastor, und ove-hilt the congregation left church. In the meantime. at. the request of the widow of Dante] Fountain, the celebration of the mass has been postponed for a few days. THE BEARS HAMMERING PRICES OF STOCKS. New Yorx, July 9—The Post's financial arti- cle says: The stock market opened at the usual Monday morning hour of 11 o'clock, dull and rather Weak from neglect. ‘The Dears took advantage of tue opportunity to hammer prices, the room traders following in the movement. ‘The ac- knowledged prominent bulls seemed to make no effort to maintain the prices of even their special stocks, and are probably willing enough to let the bears seli enough to get out a considerable short interest, which can be nade the means of giving prices an upward turn later in the week. Aside from thes there was no news and no new feature of any kind to cause a decline In prices. ‘The result of the forenoon’s trading was a decline of 4 to , the latter on Den- ver and Michigan Central Manitoba was excep- Uonably weak, and declined 8 per cent from the last price of Saturday, but recovered 1 per cent. The extreme decline at about 11:30 was greater on the general list than the above. After 11:80 the market was firmer and there was an Impravement Of 34 to 3g, leaving the net decline as above. A colored youth, named James Hill, was tried before Judge Snell this afternoon on three charges, two of which were for assaulting Officers Blandford and Falvey, of the Capitol Hill station. Thvy testified that they arrested the defendant Saturday night for disorderly conduct on the street, and he resisted and b't them on the hands, and tore off their badges and uniforms. The de- fend int claimed that he was assaulted by the ofMi- cers unnecessarily, and showed some wounds. Mr.. Smith stated that ‘our police force reflects credit on our District, but there were exceptional cases, The beating of’ this defendant by the officers wad ashame and disgrace to humanity. These men ought to be punished and rebuked for their mnts- use of power. Prosecuting Attorney Moore, in re- ply, referred toa remark of Mr. Smith about the rights and protection of citizens, and said the best rotection Of the law-abiding citizen 1s in protect- Ing the omeers wien they are simply and properly doing their duty. Judg Snell gatd It ts the duty ofa party when arrested by an officer to go with the officer. Itis shown that the defendant found It necessary to bite both officers, and a bite trom a madm.n is nearly as dangerous as a bite from a Tabid dog.” A fine of $1 was imposed in each case of assault, and $5 for the disorderly conduct. ees Local Nates. « At the regular meeting of the Eltjah Lodge, No. 80, L O. CONTINUED FROM THE FIRST EDITION. Mr. Totten having objected that these vouchers only showed sums e: led for repairs, Mr. Cole- man replied that it was his object to show that Bartlett, Robbins & Co. had had a monopoly of al sath work upon public ‘buildings ever since Mr. Hill became ‘supervising architect, and that this wWork—amounting to many thousands of dollars— had been given to this firm without competition, 1m violation of statute. Everything from Wash: ington to Nebraska went into their hands. Here Was a bill for $4 for work done In Lincoln, Neb. Mr. Thomas said that Bartlett, Ropbins & Co. had been given the work because they were the best workmen. THE EXAMINATION OF THE YOUCHERS WAS CON- ‘TINUED. “Here ts a Dill for thermometers sent to In- @ianapolis, That shows that they have no ther- ‘mometers out there,” said Mr. Coleman. Mr. Thomas.—“How do you know that?” Mr. Coleman.—“We wiil prove it” MR. TOTTEN OBJECTED to the reception of some of the vouchers because it appeared that the supervising architect had only conferred ihe authority to make repairs upon the superintendents of butldings without naming the firm that should do the work. Mr. Coleman contended that the defense must show that the superintendents had not been in- structed to give the work to Bartlett, Robbins & Co. While not conclusive the evidence tended to Prove that these men had the run of the super- vising architect's office. Chairman New said It was within the knowledge of the committee that the supervising architect only conferred authority upon the superinten- dents to have repairs made, Mr. Coleman maintained that the superinten- dents were ordered to give the work to certain contractors. Mr. Hill dented the truth of this assertion, and @ Suarp UL followed between the counsel. The City Post Office. PROMOTIONS MADE TO-DAY AMONG THE EMPLOYER. Postmaster Frank B.
