Nearly all the prominent Protestant Epis- copal clergymen bave been mentioned as the possible successor of the late Bishop Pink- Rey. Among those spoken of are Rev. Dr. Myer Lewin, of Prince George’s county, who 1s now resitent of the standing committee; Rev. Dr. Tet, of the Epiphany church; Rev, Dr. Hodges, of Baltimore; Rev. Dr, byte ar ile, Ma; Rev. Dr. Campbell Fair, Rev. Dr. A.M Randolph and Rev. Dr. Geo. Leeda, of Baltimore. ‘The next annual diocesan convention will not be held till next May. Itis thought that there will bea fal convention call by the, standing committee for September. To select a bishop re- quires a two-third vote of both clerical and lay orders, and, owing to the existing diviston of sen- timent in’ the diocese, it is thought that it will be very difficult to find a candidate who can secure two-thirds of the votes. It is sald that the man to be elected must be a conservative churchman, not identified with elther extreme, In order to get a two-third vote. Bishop Pinkney, who was elected assistant bishop in 1870, with the Tight of succession, without much opposition, was considered a+ conservative high churchman. It appears that on the occasion of the last two elec- Uohs of a bishop for the diocese of Maryland there Was in each case a contest of three years’ duration. In the coming election it Is thought the contest Will be triangular. The extreme low churchmen, the ritualists and the high churchmen will each, it is sald, present a candidate. The action of thé locesan'convention 13 not final, the approval of the church throughout the United States being Tequired. ‘This assent is obtained from the gen- eral convention. which is held once in three years, when the election of a bishop occurs within six months of Its assembling. Otherwise the action of a diocesan convention in electing a bishop 1s confirmed by the consent of the standing com- Inittees of the different dioceses, to which the assent of bishops of the various dioceses 1a also to be given. When Mr. Belrne and his party arrived, after having put a bullet into Mr. Elam’s hip, they were Monized by Virginta friends in the Monumental city, and their names were entered on the invitation book of the Baltimore club. Before the secretary had sent out cards to them, objection was made by club men, and members of the board of governors wrote to the secretary directing him to withhold | the invitations. The Beirne party arrived on Sat- urday evening and left on Sunday night, so that the Invitations were a barren honor, and it was Suggested to the proposer of the names that the entry “Out of town” be made on the book asa heat way of avolding any diMeulty.
