As the first meeting of the Players of the vartous clubs, the occasion was one of more than usual significance, and marks an era tn the history of the game in the District Which promises a brilliant future. The fine weather and the beauty of the place furnished those surroundings which have always coutrib- uted to the attractions of the game; at least to those who are only looker-on. The players are apt to take a more practical view of things, and if the courts are smooth a@d even they ask for nothing more. Stull, players and Spectators could not but admire the picturesque- hess of the scene. The courts were lild out on the velvety stretches of lawn fronting the rest- dence of President Gallaude'. The bounds were cleariy defined on the close shaven turt by lines of lm, the bright white contrasting wita the dark green of the lawn, There were three double and three single courts, and about these were clus- tered groups of ladies, thetr costumes giving an Saditional touch of color to a picture rich IN ARTISTIC EFFECTS. = The members of the Kendall Green club, whose kindly hospitality made the meeting possible, were indefatizable tn their efforts to contribute to the comfort and pleasure of thelr numerous guests, and the committee of arrangements—Messrs. KER, OF GOVERNMENT COUNSEL IN THE STAR ROUTE CASE, SAYS ABOUT THE LAW AND THE PROCEEDINGS IN PHILADELPHIA. “Under the Pennsylvania law,” satd Mr. Ker, of the staf route counsel, sperkiag to a SraK re- porter to-day about the Nickerson case, “a person desiring a divorce flies a bel or complaint. There are only four reasons why a divorce will be ranted—1. Wilful and malicious desertion; Cruel and barbarous treatment: 3. Adultery, and 4. A marriage obtained by fraud. When the Tespondent cannot be found notice of the Ibel must be published for nine inonths, then the testi- mony Is taken, and notice of the faking of that Vestimony 1s also published. ‘Then the testimony is fled tn court, and notice must be published of the application for a decree of divoree. ‘The whole proceeding takes about a_ year, and every- ‘Uuing done in the case 13 done after pudtieation in the newspapers and in the Legal Intelligencer, our official legal paper. In cases ot desertion tue decree cannot be made until fico years atter the ate of the desertion.” “I was in Philadelphia on Saturday,” continued Mr. Ker, “and saw Jud Arnold, who granted the divorce in Nickers ease. The judge does not think the criticisms upon his action are just or fair. He says the at- torneys in the case are men of honor and high Standing at the bar; that the testimony and all the papers filed were regular and 1a strict con- formity with I=w; that a divorce would have been decreed In any state upon the same evidenci that a court cannot guard against perjury, and 28 the case appeared before him, he had no dlterna- tive, but was tn duty-bound to make the decree. He also says that if the decree was obtained by fraud or perjury, the court has full power to re- Yoke the decreé, and puulsh whoever may be found to have imposed upon the court.
