GORHAM AND CORK- BILL AND GEN. SHERMAN—A GAY SCENE UKDER THE ELECTRIC LIGHTS. The opentng of the fair of the Washington Light Infantry at the rink last evening was attended with so many pleasant circumstances that it may be regarded as a promising augury of the success of the fair. The work of the decoration committee had been directed with so much good taste that the appearance of the hall, flooded with the soft Fadiance of tne electric lamps and glowing with colors, charmed the eye of the spectator at the first glance. A ‘ore minute inspection of the ele- ments that constituted the gay and brilliant scene tended rather to strengthen the first Impresstons, and the visitors threaded thelr way amid the booths, findins at every turn some new object of admiring comment. Everything wasin admirable order for the first night of an exhibition of this Magnitude, and the members of the corps in es- corting their la¢y friends about found but few oc- casions for apologizing for incomplete prepara- tions. ‘THR ATTENDANCE. The public were not disappointed, and, what 18 uch more to the point, the managers of the fair Were not disappointed in the public. Rain and rain ot the most persistent and dis- couraging character did not have its tisual effect, at any rate last evening, in keeping people at home, and the corps may regard the rath as their good friend tn demonstrating anew how great an Interest the public have taken In thelr fair. People came tn carriages, In water-proofs and under umbrellas, and appeared in the hall In such nym- bers and ‘with such fresh, bright costumes and smiling faces, that the opening was a success, in spite of frowning skies. ‘The broad aisles between the central booths and those along the walls were soon occupied with promenading couples, and although there was a large number of people, the ample space precluded crowding. Araid the other features of the fair, THE FLOWER BOOTH, circular stand with a canopy of Ight bine over it was especially admired. The prevailing color of the interior decorations was white, and the white dresses of the lady attendants harmonized with good e Pretty girls ani flowers make a Very attractive combinution, as was demonstrated last evening, and yet It was very evident that fancy articles and even ts’ and clgars and other prosaic things con be Invested with a cl when tn similar combination. OPENING of the fair, Col. Moore, the commanding officer of the corps, preceded by Mr. James F. Willett, or the committee, escorted the orator of the evening, Mr. Geo. C. Gorham, to the band stand. Col. Moore then introduced Mr. Gorham, who made a drief Speech in felicitous style, commending the laud- able objects of tie fair, and bespeaking for it the Generous support of the public. He pald a hand- ne compliment to the corps, and sald that they Were not only invinelble in peace, but visible in war. “Gen. Sherman, who was on the stand, was loudly called for upon the conclusten of Mr. Gor- hauv’s announcement that the fair was now open, and the good-natured veteran responded by pay- ing a very warm and hearty tribute to the mil- Mtary reputation of the corps and tts commanding oficer. District Attorney Corkhill was also called upon, and added his good wishes for the success Of the falr. THE BUSINESS OF THE RVENING then commenced in good earnest, the spinning Wheel began to whirl, the flower girl found her smiling way about, and the Kebeccas at the well drew up buckets of lemonade for the thirsty. It Was an animated scene and an auspicious opening of the fatr. The record of the voting for the various articles will be begun this evening. ‘The corps quilt, a handsome stik qnilt, made of alternate blocks of white and Dlue silk, Was sus- pended on the wall above the band stand, and attracted general attention. It contains the auto- graphs of all the active members of the corps, and in the large central square 1s an oll portrait of Col. Moore. It was made by Mrs. Suste M. He was accused tn Baltimore of having borrowed $200 from. Mrs. Sophia Lang, on some stuff which he repre- sented as silver. ‘She could not identify him, but said he was very lke the man whe got her money. ‘The Jury acquitted him, and he was at once taken in charge by Deputy Warden Flannery. Myers was arrested January, tozether with Joseph Mendel, both of whom were charged with having obtalned $100 from Mr. Claus Dencekas, of this by pretending that Mendel Nad a 1ot of goods e custom house in Baltimore upon which he Was unable to pay duty, and giving Mr. Daneckas & lot of bogus jewelry as c al. Cadwallader, who had been deputized to act usa l eS marshal, rearrested him, and hi how In this ef! awalt- ing the coming’ of Myers, so that they may be tried jointly, | remedy to take in Considering the wretched weather and all the circumstances involved, Mrs. Langtry was greeted on her first appearance in Washington, last even- ing, by an audience of which she might well feei Proud, whether it be regarded in point of num- bersor character. The plece offered for the occa- sion—Tom Taylor's genteel light comedy entitled “An Unequal Match,”—was fairly well presented throughout, nearly all the participants perform ing their part creditably to themselves, and on the ‘Whole to the satisfaction of the audienca. The ap- Plause was generous, Dut neither frequent, sponta- neous nor general at any time during the evening. ‘Were the company an ordinary one,—heralded. in the usual way, claiming for itself the conaidera- tion due its exact merits, and charging the ordi- nary prices for entertainments of. its class,—noth- ing more would need to pe sald. But when the or- ganization fs subordinated to the leading lady, who Comes to us in the double capacity of professional beauty and dramatic star, something a little out of the common is naturally ‘expected, and, to state the case mildly, to say the least, something better ought to have been given. Had Mra Langtry adopted the stage early in life, a8 a hardworking consetentious student, and escaped the fatal influ- ences of flattery and public attentions based on ‘other qualities than professional excellence, there 1s no reason to doubt that she might have become something more than a merely respectable actress. As itis, she does not rise, and does not give any evidences of ever belng able to rise, above the dead level of common place. Much of her acting was lady like and natural, but nowhere did she show the slightest glow of the fire of genius, or even noticeable dramatic talent. As to her beauty, that ts, of course, and must ever remain, a matter of opinion. Surély, however, it may be’ sald that had she come to this country without previous ad- vertisement of her charmsshe might have traveled from one end of it to the other, and across lots as her fancy mizht dictate, ‘without attracting unusual attention to her fice or form. On the whole, therefore, she and her management do wisely in undertaking to reap their harvest during the first season. A second crop would hardly be worth the gathering, unless other attractions suould become wofully scarce and worthless meantime. THE Ov FeLiows’ ANNIVERSARY.—The arrange- ments for the celebration of the Odd Fellows’ an- niversary were finally decided upn at a meeting of the general committee last evening. After opening remarks by Mr. Crandall, addresses will be deliveret by Rev. Richard Norris, Rev. J. R. Gray and Rev. F. A. Suler, who are members of the order. Vocal and instrumental music by Mrs McEwan, Mrs. Haas, Miss Churleton, Mrs. Dufour and Mr.Crandall, and recitations by Mr. Townsend, Mr. Lackey, will form part of the exercises. ‘The benediction’ will be pronounced by the chaplain, Rev. P, Hall Sweet, SS UNVEILING OF THE HENRY SratvE.—The mem- bers of the chorus who are to take part in the musical portion of the ceremonies at the unveiling of the Henry statue will meet this evening in the lecture room of the Foundry Church at 7 o'clock, as the full Marine band will be present at that hour to rehearse the chorus “The Heavens are Telling,” which 1s to be sung on that occasion.
