A cup-shaped sponge, found some years in Bahama waters, and said to be the second a the world, measured seven feet in cir- pe, and its walls from four to six es in thickne Up to two or three years » the Bahama fisheries showed signs of ex— haustion, but the discovery of the Eleuthera has proved a godsend to the fishermen, like to supply the markets for some yeurs to come at least. PREPARING SPONGES FOR MARKET. Next comes the process of preparing the sponges for export. First they are either placed on deck under tie tropical sun or hung in long festoons from the little vessel's mast. In either case the heat of the sun in a few days kills all the living organisms within the fibre and loosens them for the next process. Then he sponges are dumped into a sort of water de by driving acircle of small pllesa few a part from each other in the sand. puxh these piles the tide plays violently, ling away from the sponge after a few hours the sand, dead animalenia# and other impurities with which the mass is clogged. During these operations the sponge naturally emits a most fetid and revolting odor, but the final washing leaves them with that not unpleasant flavor of the sea with which they reach our marts. Usually, at least here ‘at Nassau, where the bulk of the Bahama sponges come for a market, they undergo no process of purification other than has Just been described. But sometimes they are immersed in a bath of diluted hydrochloric acid, which not only bleaches them but dissolves what few impurt- ties have been left. After the final drying sponges are assorted, baled, and then are ready for market. The grades and qualities are num- berless. There are, besides others, the “sheep wool,” selling for about $1.75 a pound: the Abaco veivet (so called trom its velvety fibre), worth about $1.10 a pound; and the te “yellow” and ‘‘grassy” varieties, all sel ling ae low as fifty cents. Before being baled, it should be added, the rougher kinds of sponge are trimmed with shears and the big sponges cut in sections, each about as large as a cocoanut. The test of the best sponges is their soft woolly sur- face under the touch, and above all the tough- ness of the fibres, which can readily be ascer- ax tained by tearing one or two of them apart. The Bahamas, though prolifle In sponges, produce | few of the highest qualities, which are used tor surgery and other delicate work. These come from the Mediterranean sea, where divers bring them up, and some of the finest grades have been sold as high as £50 or $100 a pound. In some of its broader phases its sponge indus- try gives Nassau some local features of rare noy- eity. The little boats thronging its harbor, the chattering crews, the warehouses lining’ the strand, the “Sponge Exchange,” where gj mnges of every grade and shape and size may be seen by the ‘thousand, are specialties of the port's commerce not to be found elsewhere In the West Indlea,or, perhaps, in the world. Sponges cover the wharves, their broken and tattered masses float over the harbor, great heaps of clippings line the sands, and, cast up by the waves, coyer the beach far below and above the city. The negro diver, at command, will plange from your end Switzerland are now making up these thing . Which will begin to pour in about next “What are they?” “Everything you ean think of.
