ATLANTA, Ga., April 10.—Samuel Lewis, colored, who murdered’ “ Dink” Weems, also colored, on February 7, was taken from the jail at Amberson's Station, Alabama, last night, by a mob composed of six white men and seventy-five negroes, and hanged. DrsMowra, Iowa, April 10.—Congressman Cutts, of the 6th district of Iowa, 1s dangerously Ill at his home at Oskaloosa, with an acute attack of peri- tonitis, He has been in ill health for the pee two years with bronchial and pulmonary troubles, and his recovery now 4s hardly expected. The Tewkesbury Almshouse Abuses. FURTHER TESTIMONY TO-DAY. Boston, April 10.-Gov. Butler was present at the Tewkesvury almshouse investigation to-day. Joseph A. Chase testified that he had worked for Miss Manning, and with her knowledne had taken bodies to the Harvard Medical school by order of Capt. Marsh and his son. ‘be governor then fntroduced a sermon by a Mr. Sanborn, a minister of Lawrence, in which it was stated that Mr. Spaulding, one of ‘the trustees of the almshouse had boasted that while no emolument was attached to the trusteesiip, he could make tt pay. The governor intimated that this was done by turning over contracts to out- side parties wish whom Spaulding divided the rofts, " John H. Chase sald that since his first testi- mony he had gone to Tewkesbury with a detec- tive and unearthed comin aipng et tocontain the body of Joseph Clark. The body had previously ‘been sold, and the coffin, which was empty, was brought to Boston. Tiere were other coffins in the same condition, Detective Innes corroborated Chase's testimony as to the taking up of Clark's empty coffin, and the governor sald that he would bring it be fore the committee, but the chairman said the com- mittee preferred to go and look at it. A delegation of some twelve or fifteen merchants and business men onthe line of Pennsylvania avenue were before the Commissioners this morning and held aconsultation with President EAmonds in behalf of the retention of Lieutenant Arnold upon the police force. Mr. B. U. Keyser and Mr. Jesse B. Wilson and others apoke very warmly in his behalf, President Edmonds stated that all these matters had been referred to Major Dye, and that his wishes and preferences in relation to whom he desired for Iteutenants would be respected by the Commissioners.
