NOY —- Qbe Evening Star bas a reguiar. permanent Bona fice cally cireutation more thap trebic that of anv other daliv paper pi Washington. linhed and ccunl te that of all tne Pers here ndded together. Double-Sheet To-morrow. ‘The demand upon the advertising space of THe Brak is so large that {: is absolutely neccasary, in Order to insure classification and insertion, that Advertisements should be handed in before 12 m. tomorrow. oo. In its tilt with Mr. Blodget, over the industrial Statistics of Philadelphia, the census authorities Beem to have got decidedly the better of that gen- Ueman, as the case stands at present. That office has, however, falled up to to!s time to Justify its action tn enforcing against this city rules differ €nt froin those appiled to any other place tm the country, and thus unjustly giving the population Of Washington in 1890.at a Mzure some 20,000 below the actual number. The action of that office has Probably done all the mischief such an error 1s capable of doing, since its incorrect tables have Deen accepted and published as authentic by the American Almsnae, the English Statesman’s Year Book, and other publications of that class, and a correction now would fail to catch up with the error; but one would think that, for Its own credit, 4€ not to atone for a gross act of Injustice, that Office would revise its flrures and publish Wash- Angton’s true population In tts final report. If it does not do this it will be easy to weaken public confidence in any of its tables about which a ques- tien may be ratsed hereafter. > —____ It lawyer Bigelow charges Mrs. Mason $3,500 for not getting her husband out of jull, how much ‘Would he have charged had he succeeded? ——____++_____ The people of Uniontown are making sorry amends for the short coming of their Jury in fatl- ing to convict the murderer Dukes, by giving the escaped criminal notice to leave the place. This is the same spirit which controlled the jury, only exhibited in a different way, and its manifesta- tion im this form refircts as lttle credit on the community as did the veriict of that astonishing body. It there is enough leaven left In the place to save the lump, it ought to be utilized In educat- ing the people of Fayette county up tos point of intelligence and morals that would make such a Verdict impossible. That accomplished, there will Be no occasion for mob law. —__—_~+-e If unpaid taxes are as reliable an indication of Dusiness and financt:! depression as they are pop- Ularly supposed to be, Sin Francisco must be in an unenviable condition. Her delinquent tax list for last year makes a volume of 137 pages a trifle Jafger than those of the Congressional Record, set ‘Up in solid agate type. Among the political sins that unfriendly journals are attempting to fasten upon the President ts Fesponsibility for the election of Ketfer as Speaker. If these same Journals will consuit their own files they will discover that, Just after Kelfer’s election, they reproached the President because of his attl- tude of Indifference in the contest. His critics then thought that he ought to have prevented the election of Keifer, instead of adhering to his avowed policy of taking no part in the fight ——_<e2—__ It is a well-recognized soctal fact that the cheap Iiterature of the day has a corrupting tendency Upon the minds of the young. The low price of these poisonous publications places them within Yeach of boys and girls everywhere, and as the Production of them ts profitable, there {s an active Competition in it It ts only within the last few Years that the young have been exposed to this corrupting influence. Formerly the cost of pub- Ushing books piaced the price beyond the pennies and nickels that children could scrape together, and ordinartly a boy or girl only obtained a boox ‘through purchase by the parents. Now, unfortu- Bately, It Is the very worst class of iiterature that 4s 50 cheapened as to fall readily into the hands of the young. Pubilshers pander to the morbid taste Decause it pays, and the writer who can paint highest price. Juvenile imitators of the James brothers have been detected with pistols, pur- ehased witn stolen money in several instances. ‘They had read dime novels, which pictured the Yobber and agsassin as ahero, Two youths not Out of their teens, In Arkansas, lately carried their admiration of the James brothers to actual per- formance, and undertook to rob a ratiway train. ‘Now, as Inmates of the penitentiary, they confess ‘that it was vicious literature which instilled crim- inal ideas into thetr minds. But the other day a Young man, he was not twenty-one years of age, was. hanged in New York for murder. When he shot his inoffending victim down he exultingly said, “Now I’ve knocked out my man, and 'ma ough.” He was ambitious to be known as a noted riminal, and it took him tothe gallows. It be- hooves society, therefore, to correct this evil by Prevention rather than by punishment, if that can ‘Be done. It is a difficult problem, but it is one that @emands consideration.
