Secrerary Forcer left this city very quietly on Saturday afternoon, and the fact of iis departure was not known at the Treasury department till this fhorning. Ashuelot near Yokohama, when a number of lives were lost, and on the strength of that report Secretary Chandler has ordered a court-martial for the trial of Commander H. E. The parti- culars of the loss of the Ashuelot have never been made public, but as her duty was simply coasting, and as there was no storm atthe tme it is gen- erally thought that her logs was the result of negligence of some kind. CoMMODORE WILSON AND THE DISMISSED MESSEN- eR, BLACK.—Commodore Wuson, chief of the bu- reau of construction of the Navy department, says resarding Oliver C. Black, the colored messenger of ‘the Navy department, who claims that he was discharged because he fefused to do the private house work of Commodore Wilson. that Black 1s a man who has been spoiled by good usage, and 1s always hunting for a soft berth. He says that he Was not discharged for the reasons he claims, but because he made himsejf personally offensive about the office, and felt, his position so much that he would spend hours making spread eagle speeches to other employes. When he first came to the Navy department there was no duty thathe Was not willing to perform, and when Commodore Wilson’s servant was alck he voluntarily offered to do some of his work for a few days only. His presence, however, soon became very disa- reeable, and when spoken to about his conduct ie wrote impudent. letters, not only to Commo- dore Wilson, but to his wife. "He was told that it he would resign he could return to bis position at the navy yal He gave no verbal answer, but in the evening Commodore Wilson says he recetved an impudent letter in which Black said he would not resign. There was some discussion as to how the argu- ment should proceed. and the court decided that the defense should have the opening 2nd close. MR. BRADY AND HIS LAWYERS NOT IN HARMONY. Mr.Brady rising from his seat on the stand, said, “If the court please I would like to say that I pre- fer to answer that question and all other ques- tions of that kind.
