BRADY'S CROSS-SXAMINATION CONTINUED TO-DAY. when Judge Wyile’s court met this morning Mr. Bitss continued the cross-examination of Mr. Brady, who sald he did not remember that his attention had been attracted by any incongruity in Miner's ‘aMdavit. The witness described the methods of preparing advertisements and letting miscellaneous service in vogue in the department: In reference to the expedition on the Bismarck and ‘Tongue ‘River route, the witness sald he considered it improved the service to make more frequent trips, and such could not be ordered, with any justice to the contractor, without expedition, as It would have been ruinous to him. The expeiition made the servics what the witness called a good service. The witness was asked how, if the pay of expadited service was based in strict proportion upon the number of men and horses employed, a route which was taken at a losing rate could be converted Into a profitable route by expedition, unless the allowances exceeded the law. The witness replied that he had had no experience as a contractor, and that was a question for the con- tractor. “PUTTING UP” SERVICE. The witness said that in the case of expediting the Bismarck routewafter Miner had offered to throw up the contract, he deemed that a speedier and cheaper way of getting goo’ service there to readvertise and relet the route. The witness w: cross-examined at considerable length as to his view of his powers under the contract. He thought he had power to extend s sdule Gme when the length of the route, as ad too short. He had never shortened the schedule When it was advertised too short. Mr. Bliss having anked the witness in relation to his sta’ ment that he expedited certain service for Con- gressman Kidder; whether he was tn the habit of “putting up” ¢ for individuals, the witness replied: “I sometimes tried to accommodate my friends in that way.
