The defendants are not indicted for playing a friendly game of poker, with Mr. Belford or any Other person, nor yet for encouraging undue emi- gration westward. What they are charged with 1g entering into a conspiracy for the purpose of de- frauding the United States of a large amount of Money. The conspiracy clause has been estab- Ushed by the most conclusive testimony, and that the gang got away with their plunder the accounts of the public treasury unfortunately but too clearly demonstrate. No evidence tending to overthrow these points has yet been introduced by the defendanta. Everything they have offered in the way of testimony ts calculated to draw at- tention from the charges contained in the indict- ment, instead of tending to controvert them. Their tactics in thus trying to divert the mind of the Jury from the real issues involved are simply those Of a fleeing criminal who throws dust in the eyes of a pursuing officer, hoping thereby to escape arrest. —_____+«-+—_____ When the tariff commission bill was before the Senate, a Senator, In opposing it, sald: “Congress May come, and Congress may go, but a commis- sion once created, with good salaries attached, goes on forever.” He was assured by the friends Of the bill that It did not create any permanent commission; that the proposed commissioners ‘Would be paid only for time actually consumed in the discharge of their duties, and when they shoul! subinit to Congress that elucidation of the tariff question expected of them thelr official and Salaried existence wouldend. It appears, how- ever, that the commission was imbued with longer Iife than tts creators antictpated. The tariff has been settled by the enactment of a statute regu- lating {t, but the commission continues to draw money from the Treasury. Within a week past a raft for $2,000 on account of the commission has Deen recetved by the U. S. Treasurer, and in Janu- ary last, subsequent to the submission of its re- port to Congress, another draft for $5,000 was paid. ‘The total cost of the commission to the country up to the present has been $69,000, and It {s very much easier to find that out than to discover where the country has been benefited by the expenditure. It now turns out that the act crea- Ung the commission was not so well guarded as its advocates supposed. It sets no limit to the existence of the body, and, though all the possi- dle duties have been performed, it seems probable alaries will be drawn until Congress by ing act puts a stop to it. > but its no matter what Wiggins He ts a crank.
