Mr. Dorsey chivalrously comes to the relief of Representative Belford by publishing a card ad- Gressed “ to the country,” in wich he vehemently denies Rerd-I’s testimony tn court about a certain heck for $2,000. Mr. Dorsey evidently me:ns Well, but It {s strange that it has not occurred to him that the most complete and crushing refuta- Yon of Rerdeil’s story would be the production of the stubs of the book from which it Is alleged the disputed check was taken. A simple card, spread Oul over the whoie country, as It were, becomes too thin to amount to much In the way of polnted and direct evidence. A sworn statement a8 a wit- Ress, or the missing check-book, would be much more conclusive. ————__+e»—_____ ‘Tho funeral procession of a distingutshed ex- Gonfederste oMcer in Baltimore yesterday was composed of the 1 ry and semt-military or- @un'zations of the men who served on both sides Guring the rebellion. The ex-Union soldiers vied ‘with the ex-confeierates in doing honor to the memory of the dead of ‘The war really seems © be over, In spite of what the politicians say and do. —_<e+—____ Corporal puntshment as a means of enforcing Giscipline In schoots has been long since aban- doned in the best educational institutions. It isa Felic of a past era, that is however, sull preserved end maintained in the Pennsylvania military academy. The principal of that institution has Just been tried at Chester upon the charge of bru- tally beating a pupti, and the accusation was 60 fully sustained that the academy ought to lose all it pupils unless several changes are made in its Corps oi instructors. The accuséd principal ad- mitted that he woipped a thirteen-year old boy With a twisted rawhide, and other witnesses testi- fled to the brutses inflicted upon the boy’s body by the beating. After this punishment the boy was condemned to soittary confinement in a box of a cell. One of the oMcers of the academy tn his testimony justified the conduct of the principal, and declared that nis method was to “punish a boy until his spirit ts broken.” He admitted that in order to break a pupil’s spirit he would do any- thing nece-sary (in the way of brutal treaument) “except tokill him.” That sort of treatment would convert the best of boys Into the meanest pupils. Indeed, the effect of the inbuman system of discl- pline was illustrated by the very boy whose abuse had led to the trial. The several instructors who testified In the case admitted that during the first year of his attendance the boy was aD excellent pupil, standing at the head of his classes, and Making a record for deportment above the aver- age. Under the spirit-breaking discipline, instead of advancing, he declined, and became negligent and unruly. It {s to be hoped the jury In the case will render a verdict that will teach the principal nd his assistants a lesson according to their own ‘theory of severe purishments, ——__ +> —____ The Western Union Telegraph company has bought a half interest !n an underground system for laying wires, and tts president announces that, after a fuir trial, If the results are satisfac tory, the Western Uni 1 substitute the sub- Yerranean for the aerial wires, as far as the former can be made available. The letter of the presi- Gent containing this announcement was read ata Meeting of a committee of the Pulladelphia city counctl, but there was nothing In {t to indicate that the policy of the company as to underground ‘Wires wasto be confined to thatecity. On the con- trary, the terms of the letter convey the Idea that the plan coutemplated 1s tobe general and not Jecal. In all the citles of the country the hostility Of public seutiment to alr-strung wires 13 so manl feat that the telegraph and telephone companies ‘Fealize that it ts not to be longer resisted. <> —____ ‘The free-and-easy-slash-around-no-matter-what- the-Judge-thinks style which prevails in the tri- ‘Dunals of justice in Colorado docs not seem to be ‘Well adapted to the Supreme Court of this Dis- ‘trict, as the Representative from the “Centennial State” found out yesterday, to his cost. Like other rollicking rangers of the Rocktes, Colonel Belford may find himself in an uncomfortable corner, oc- castonally, but “this heart still beats warmly for ‘As native land.” Likewise, “the man that lays his band upon a woman, save in the way of kind- ness, 1s a wretch, whom ’twere gross flattery to ame a cowara.” What nebler sentiments than these does anybody want?
