SENATORS CONGER AND VOORHEES PRESENTED WITH CANES BY THE PRINTERS AND BOOKBINDERS. Senator O. D. Conger, of Michigan, received a visit at his home on M street last evening from a committee representing the Printers’ and Book- | binders’ Unions, who presented the Senator with a very handsome gold-headed cane, in recognition of his defense of the rights and’ objects of the trades-untons in a recent debate in the Senate. ‘The committee, whose coming Was unexpected by the Senator, was com of Messrs. E. C. Grum- ley, president; A. D. Brock, Geo. M. Depue, A. P. Marston, Geo. J. Webb, J. P. Hamilton, W. W. Maloneyand Sam’i Haldeman,ot we Typographical Union, and Messrs. H. S. They were received by’ the Senator in his parlors, where, after brief introductions, Mr. Brock, who officiated as spokesman, read an’ address, stating that the committee had been commissioned by Cotumbla. ‘Typographical Union and the Book- binders’ Union “to formally express to you their deep and grateful senso of the obligation con- ferred upon them, and upon workingmen every- where, by your unexpected and unsolicited de- fense upon the floor of the Senate of the rights, privileges and objects of our trades union.” The Senator made a modest and feeling reply, express- ing bis gratitude forthe honor conferred upon him. He expressed his surprise that his un- premeditated words in the Senate had called forth Such a response, and sald he bad received tele- ams and messages from typographical unions m Maine to Callfornia. After other expres- sions of the Senator's sympathy with the workingmen, the interview closed and the committee withdrew. A similar call was made at the Portland, for the purpose of presenting a cane to Senator Voorlices, who joined Senator Conger in his defense of the Printers’ Union in the Sen- ate. Senater Voorhees belng confined to his room by sickness, the cane Was sent to him with a mes- sage wishing him speedy recovery. The Senator returned an answer that he would on some future occasion make suitable acknowledgment. The canes were inscribed altke, as follows: “Senator —, from the Printers’ and Bookbinders’ Unions, of Washington, D. C., in appreciation of his able defense, in the United States Senate, of their rights.” ——— FIGHTING THE WAR OVER AGAIN IN A PoLice CRLL—A soldier named Patrick Hasson was be- fore Judge Snell to-day on a charge of assaulting a burly Maryland farmer, named Thos. W. Dorsey, who stated that he was arrested last night for be- ing drunk, and was putin the cell with the de- fendant, who knocked him down in the cell and almost killed him. The soldier stated that when Dorsey was put Into the cell he said he was a rebel, and he could lick any Union soldier in the army, and particu!arly the one before him, and he led to try it on, but got left. Judge Snell ismissed the charge against the defendant. He was then taken to the Freedman’s hospit but died before he reached there.
