Mr. John Markriter, who has been in failing health for the last three years, died at 11:30 a, m. to-day, inthe 61st year of his age. During the latter portion of his protract+d illness he was a Great sufferer, but he endured his agonizing pain up to his last breath with the patience and Chris- tian fortitude characteristic of his whole life. He Was a noble man in every sense of the word; an Invaluable citizen, both in his direct work for good, and in the example of his honorable, stainless an useful career from boyhood. Mr. Markriter was born in Georgetown, and his entire life has been spent in the District of Colum- bia. When a boy he entered the paper hanging establishment of the late 8 P. Franklin, and, in 1864, he began business for himself, on 7th street, between DandE. By his probity, enterprise and good judgment he soon built up a fine busi- Hess, and his place became an attractive resort on account of the fine works of art, and tasteful arti- cles of interior decoration displayed there. Some years ago Mr. Markriter built a handsome store, ‘with an art gallery attached, on E street, near to which he removed his increasing business, Where it is now continued. He leaves a wife and eight children; three sons and five daughters. The eldest, Dr. John J. Mark- Titer, is the resident pecs at the central free dispensary. Mr. Stephen Markriter, the second gon, has been for some time connected with his father in business. The remains will be buried at Mt. Olivet ceme- tery, in the family lot.
