THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON SATURDAY March 3, 1883. . Editor. regular. permanent fide dally circulation more thap trebie ds ahed THe Stan office is connected with the Telephone Ex- change. Advertisements, orders for the peper by mail and otherwise, news, or any information or business n be sent day or nicht, free of charge. Senatorg Van Wyck came very effusively to the front yesterday in defense of the star route con- sptrators, hfs chamfonshtp of thelr cause taking the shape of an outpouring of vindictive abuse of the government for employing counsel and spend- ing money for the effective prosecution of the men who stole millions from the public treasury. His zeal in behalf of the star route men led hin to declare that the sult against these colossal Tobbers Was one that “onght to be treated as an ordinary sult,” and he made it a matter of grave complaint that “grand lawyers have been gathered together by the Department of Justice,” to prosecute this “ordinary sult” at heavy expense and without limit as to time. Mr. Van Wyck, in the guileless simpltelty of his nature, does not seem to be aware that this “ordinary suit” is one prosecuted agatnst the most formidably entrenched band of public robbers known in the history of this country, if not of the world; a gang that have two or three million dollars of stealings at their command to enable them fo fight the government in the courts, pay a host of the highest priced lawyers in the land, corrupt Jurors and detectives, purchase newspaper support and Indulge in a wiolesale attempt to crush out opposition and Influence public opinion. Further, Mr. Van Wyck does not seem to know that the tedious delay in the progress of the trialis due mainly to the tactics of the lawyers for the defense, who have throughout avoided a dircet Issue upon the merits of the case, and main- tatned a polley of evaston and procrastination, the continuous interposition of splitting objections, wire-drawn cross-examination of gov- ernment witnesses, and almost hourly tnterrup- tons to the progress of the trial, by attempts to bully the juage, the witnesses, or the counsel for government. see The nomination of Mr. James B. Edmonds for Distriet Commissioner seems to meet with favor, as giving the Distric qualt too, ofMicer of good business tions and undoubted integrity. It is felt, that the President acted judictously in ap- ting one democrat upon the board of Com- foners. Polities and partisaasilp ought to be riuled from the District government. Every interest would be bound to suffer if tie board of Commissioners were composed of men bent more upon furthering the interests of any Party than of the citizens, This opinion was cleariy entertained by Congress wien the present form of goverpment was establisued, and there Was a tacit understanding that both leading par- es should be represented upon the board. —— s Rerdell’s testimony has been corroborated”in every material point by witnesses of unquestioned tapetency and unimpeachavle veracity. Per- Sons employed to assist Rerdell {n getting up aset of bogus books with Which to decetve a congress- jonal committee remember that they were di- rected to omit the entries showing payments to Smith and Jones, the aliases under which, according Wo Rerdetl, the then second assistant postmaster general and his clefk recelvei their share of the plunder. The fact thata conspiracy to defraud the government existed has been most conelu- sively estabilsned by evidence oral and docu- mentary, and Brady has been clearly connected ‘with it under the di-guise of an assumed name. ‘The case of the government 1s complete and con- Vineing. It Js, In short, unassallable at any point. ——_—_—_~<e>___ Ex-Attorney General Blick Is reported as ex- pressing the opinion that membersof legislative bodies are not influenced in their action or JjJudg- ment by free-railway tle ‘There ts where the railroad companies and Judge Black differ. ‘They have been distributing free passes for a great many years to the law makers of the country, as ‘Weil as to judicial and executive officials, and if they were not wv satisfied that the practice paid. haudsomely they would have given it up long ago. Eallroads are not in the habit of giving something for nothing, any more than a pawnbroker, and a pound of their experience 1s worth a ton of Judge Black's theory. ets. ~~» Gov. Cleveland hearkened to the voice of the w York mlilionatres and vetoed the bill to re- e elevated rallroad fares to five cents, which had ed by an overwhelming vote in the legis- lature. Along array of the names of men who count their possessions by the million to a petition isa formidable decument in the eyes of a gov- ernor who expects to step up hicher. ~~ » AND OTHERS Caving? the: city ave sequalea & exansine mie tant Stock of STEEL ENGRAVINGS, framed and unframed, which are offered for a few days, ata most liberal re- N a ENATORS, REPRESENTATIVE @uction for cash.
