— — __THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON .. February 26. 1583. PIONDAY... = = CROSBY S. NOYES: Qke Evening Star bas 1 re: tena fae daily cirenintion more thar trepie that of anv other daiiv vaper published in Washington. und eaual te that of all the @tner daily papers here nided — = ae ‘THE Stax office is connected with ebaaxe. Advertiements, orders for snd otherwise, pews, or any information or business an be sent day or night, free of charce. Another highly interesting but very sickening chapter In the history of crime In Washington 1s furnished in the sworn statement of Donohue, to be found im another column of to-day’s paper. It lays bure the miystery of the robbery of Judge Caristiancy’s room, in the National Hotel, shortly after the return of that gentleman from Peru It must not be forgotten that it ts the statement of an acknowlelged criminal, and to be received therefore with some grains of allowance. It is Greatly to be regretted, indeed, that tt Is not wholly untrue. To have its taisity conclusively shown would be much more gratifying to the pud- lic than to have ts truthfulness established, Un- fortunately, however, there is hardly a hope for the first-named result. The statement of Donohue, And the oth«rs who have confessed, have been and can be so fully corroborated by unimpeachable circumstantial and positive testimony that there 48 no escape from the conclusion that Washington has for years past been at the mercy of one of the strongest and most corrupt combinations of erim- inals ever shown by the annalsof crime. This lamentable result seems to be now positively es- {ablished, and there ts nothing left to be done but to meet the case as It stands and apply the quick- estand most eff-ctive remedy in their reach. If Sever.il of the ex-detectives of the city do not bring up in the penitenttiry, in consequence of the rev- @lations which have been made, it must be be- Cause justice miscarries They ought, Indeed, to feceive double punishment, for they are twice as Guilty as the thieves with whom they consorted. As detectives they were the chosen protectors of Society and the sworn enemies of crime and of criminals. Their position thus brought them into Confiitential relations with the publicfwhich en- abled them to not alone acquire a knowledge of thieves and thetr practices, but also an intimate Acquaintance with private affairs and private pos- Ssslons. This knowledge, It now appears, was used against the very people whom they were em- ployed to protect and from whom they received their pay. A blacker and more damnable prosti- tution of oficial power and position was never known. ‘The accused ex-offictals are nct in a position Bow to assume a high moral ground and protest that the evidence against them 1s confined to con- fessed criminals) They have been overtaken by their own misdeeds, and, stripped of their badges, disgracetully expelled from office, they are ex- Posed as the companions of thieves and sharers of Stolen plunder. The public will look with anxiety for further developments, and await with impa- ‘enc e the course of justice. | +2. —___ Therumor that Senator Cameron, of Pennsyl- Yapia, will resign at the close of the present Con- gess 1s revived, but it searcly needs a denial from ‘the Senator himself to stamp It as untrue. Even grant that he is weary of public life, as the rumor says, to resign now would be to hand his Seat over to a democrat, as the governor and legis- Jature of Pennsylvania are democratic. Rather than bring about this result, at a time when the Yepublicans will require every Senator they have inorder to control the Senate, Mr. Cameron will, mo doubt, bear the burdens of public life awhile longer. ‘The French government tay find It expedient to leok after the Comte de Chambord. He regularly distributes among the poor of Parts free bread tickets, and that the beneficiaries may know and Temember who their benefactor 1s, his coat-of- arms 1s stamped on the tieketa. Under the guise of charity this inheritor of royal blood is perhaps Seeking popularity for political purposes. Fortu- nately, however, his benevolent project is not amenable to the charge of conspiracy. —___- > _____ In urzing Jules Ferry to form a ministry, Presi- dent Grevy comprehended the man whom France needed. Already the difficulties and dangers Which beset the republic have been removed and the machinery of government is agala working smoothly. If M. Ferry lives he may be the next President of the French republic. ——___~+e»—_-____ (iThe senatorial struggle in Michican still drags along, but as Mr. Ferry has dropped out of the fight it ts probable that the antagonism between the republican factions may subside, so as to bring about an early settlement upon some one of the numerous aspirants — <> ___ Herr Most, the communist agitator, came to this country to attain fame and make money. He got netther; but instead has found that obscurity, Which, sooner or later, engulis humbugs of his class. prourr ACTION If NEEDED WHEN CRAMPED, DON'T EXPERIMENT ON YOURSELVES, YOU NEED RELIEF AT ONCE!
