[Boston Globe.} On a recent trip by s representative of this paper to the city of Haverhill, Mase., # most important incident ‘occurred, which cannot fail to be of the greatest interest to all, and especially to our lady readers. Ths newsva- Per man met a lady s trifle past middie age, with luxu- rious white hair, that contrasted strikingly with piero- ing bisck eyes. She posscesed a straicht, full habit, womanly, but commanding, combined with man- ners wholly lady-Hke, and. yet pronounced. Any ‘geute judge of human nature could eee at once hat he was in the presence of an unusual person- aze—one destined to more than most of her sex, and to exert am influence fer-reaching in its power. This lady was Mra. M, W. Wingate. Alnost from childhood she has taken a epecial interest in the bodily troubles of her esx, an@ has probably been more successful in relieving suffering and saving lives than any other woman in America, Indeed. she seems to have been to women what Florence Nightingale and Dorothy Dix were to the suffering soldiers. ‘The in- stances of women who were in the «reatest sgony and apparently beyond the rech of buman aid, that ehe has restored to heslth and happiness, :re almost innu- merable, and it was only natural that the scribe should become spectally interested and wish to converse with her more in detail. “How long have yon been engaged in the practice of medicine, Mrs. Winsate?” “* For more than 25 years.” “*A long time, certain y. How did you happen to enter the field at that early day when women in the pro- fessions were specially frowned down upon?” “‘I think I must have inherited a taste from my Father, Professor J. C. \ood, of Harvard ovllere. He was em- inent in the profession, a hard worker and equally earn- est in his recreations. He hunted considerably, and I rememb:rwhen oniy nine years old I used to dissect the birds andanima's he had killed. I felt infatuated with medical science, even then and the has continued up to the ; resent time.” ‘*And did you begin your studies 80 early in life?” “T can hardly say when I began, for I can not remem- ber when I did not read medical literature. You would scarcely believe it, but I was a slender girl and did not ‘weigh over 120 pounds, bur I used to sit up night after night unti.2 o'clock in the morning poring over my studies, and never dreaming of the flight of times. It Seemed as though calls for my attendance on the sick always came uneoicited. I certainly cannot fix the date when I first began practicing. Of course most of my pationts were women, and the natural sympathy I felt for my sex has increased during all these years where I have been brouzht so closely in contact with them and have learned to anticipate their needs and sympathize with their sufferings. After the opening of the Boston Medical Gollege I appeared before the fa- culty; passed examination and received a diploma. I had pragticed for years previous to that time, but thought it desirable to recive another diploma, which I did'without any effort.” “‘Your experience with the many‘and serious diseases of women having been eo extensive must also be valu- able? Can you give me some facts rezarding them?" “*I find that woman seems born to suffering, and where she avolds it, it is by reason of some care on her patt or owing to some special renewing power. Itis true some women xo through life without unusual suf- foring, but they are none the less in danger, for there are critical periods all along their pathway when the ‘utmost precaution is required. The innumerable com- plaints called female weaknesses; the irregularities of Ufe and changes of the systom all indicate the perils which hang over every woman's career, and which, un- Jess attended to, may result dinastronsl ** But is there no way by which these terrible troubles can be avoided?” - ““ihat has been the problem for years. The habits of life and the demands of fashion are clearly at war with the health of women. Ihave been, perhaps, unusually Successful in my treatmentof their troubles, but there have been many cases that seemed specially stubborn. T recall one in particular. I had exhausted all the usual expedients and the results were not satisfactory. I be- came worried over the case and really did not know what todo, but finally thought 1 would try something outof the usual line. I had heard a certain remedy Tecommended very highly and so I procured some and made s chemical analysis of it. I found it was perfectly pure, and that the ingredients were unususliy valuable, Sol began giving itto my patient, changing it how- ever, into a bottls of my own. To my great joy it seemo to have an almost immediate effect and a com- Plete cure was the result. Since then I have used it con- stantly in my practice and have cured every form of female weaknoes, as well as displacements, dropsical tumors, cellu dropsy and all such troubles. I have also used it with the best of results in cases of pregnancy and gestation, Indeed I have found it of untold value and benefit." “‘Have you any ob‘ection to giving me the name of this remedy of which you speak?” “‘None whatever. After recess Judge Wylies 14 the question was iu relation to the right of the defense to question the witness regarding a memorandum given to the witness by Dorsey, as the witness testified, and the purpose of the defense, as stated, was to show that the memorandum was written by the witness himself. The court then read Rerdell’s ‘st itement in his aMdavit of June, 1881, as to his ability to imitate Dorsey's handwriting, and his assertion that be had writt: these memoranda himself. The witness, however, had testified now that that statement Was untrue. and that he had no such skill as was claimed. Now, the defense had a right to cross examine the witness to show, if Uhey could, that he did have such skill, and they could pr duce the parer and examine him as to that. ‘They could interrogate hi as to the contents of a paper not produced for the purpose of testing the witness’ Memory; but 2s It was a collateral matter, they would be bound Dy his answer. ‘The witness sali he bad exhibited memorandum Im Ink to Messrs. Congressman Belford spent almost the entire Gay yesterday in an effort to trace the check al- Iuded to in the testimony given by Rerdell in the star route trial Wednesday. In answer to a ques tion last night as to the result of his search, he said:—-“ The Forty-fitth Congress met in spectal session on March 18th, 1879, and adjourned July Ist, 1879. I left for the west the evening of the adjournment, or the night following. Early this morning I went to Col. Ingersoll’s house and asked him to give me the date of the check. He said be could not give me the date, for the simple reason that there was no check exhibited. I then went to Middleton's bank, and there found Mr. Middle ton, and asked him if at any me during the ex- tra Session, or snteequently, I had presented any check at his bank. and he promptly replied * No.” 1 then asked him to examine Dorsey’s account from February 1st, 1879, to August Ist, the same year, with @ view of ascertaining whether an; check of the character described by Rerdell b: ; been paid during that time, He consented, and. a8 a result of that examination, It was found that no such check had been paid or charged to Dor- sey’s account” to ‘The District Commiesionership. ‘There Is little prospect that a new District Com- missioner will be nominated before the adjourn- ment of Congress.
