Hudson, for the past year of the firm of Hudson & Waple, No. 938 Louisiana ave- nue, (commission merchants), left this clty on the 7th ult. and has not since been heard trom. Hud- son Is a native of Fredericksburg, Va., and is about forty years old. He had been here for twelve or more years, At one time he carried on the grocery business at 10th and D streets,in South Washington, and was with T. J. Clark (doing bust- ness under the name of D. M. Ream, at 916 Louist- ana avenue), a8 bookkeeper, and subsequently was interested in the rirm. About July, 1851, he made a proposition to Mr. C. tocheat thelrcreditors, whieh roposition Mr. Clark indignantly spurned, and 8 Giscoution of, the firm. was the result,’ Some months after this Hudson formed a copartnership with Mr. R. H. Waple, of Charlestown, West Vir- ginia, and established business at 938 "Louisiana avenue, Mr. Waple putting fp $2,500. On the day above named (January 2th, 188.) this firm sold out to Swoyne & Bruin for $1,216, and Hudson took the money and drew all the funds of the firm from bank, and then making an appointment to meet Waple early in the week to settle their affairs, he left the city, and has not been seen since. It 1s thought that he has caused a loss of about $3,000 to the creditors of the firm, most of them poor Virginia shippers, in the valley and on the Midland Ratl- rozd. Mr. Clark alone has received over $1,600 worth of claims against him, and inquiries are | beng made orally and by letter daily. It 1s thought that Hudson has gone to Chicago, and from ‘he talk on Loulstana avenue, It 1s likely that he wiil be sent for. Some of the shippers will pay a handsome reward for his capture. ae ‘The Watcr Famine. ‘THE OPINION OF MR. HENRY LARMAN. In a brief conversation with Mr. Henry Larman, a Srar reporter was informed that 1n the opinion of that gentleman the plan of the present distri- bution of water in this city ts as perfect as it can | be under the circumstances. Of course, with ad- ditional cost, some slight modifications or im- | provements could be made. ‘The only permanent remedy 1s by the introduction of more water. The problem of supplying the St. Elizabeth hos- Pital withpure water has been solved by succeas- ‘tully sinking an artesian well near the river bank. ‘The institution has been supplied by pumping water from the Eastern branch into a large tank, and again pumping 1t into the tanks in the tops of the different butldirgs. It was proposed to carry Water from the city in pipes, and an ample appro- Driation was made for that purpose. If the present: Plan succeeds, as is expected, an ample supply of clear, pure water will be secured by wells, and at least half of the appropriation will besaved. A gen- tleman named Robinson came along some time ago and offered to sink an artesian well for nothing, and if it should prove successful, to enter into a contract to furnish water from a number of wells for the whole institution. He has sunk a pipe about 300 Toots peineipelly. through hard clay, but hos reached a beautirul blue sand, and the water now rises 25 feet above the surface of the groun flowing through the pipe at the rate 82,000 gallons in twenty-four hours. It is very ure, having been found upon analysis to contain but atrace of mineral matter. A contract has been made with Mr. Robinson to supply the insti- tation with 250,000 gallons of water in twenty-four hours. The contractor feels sure of success, an estimates that It will take about iene wells, and he will probably sink them all within a radius of ity feet, as he finds that one well does not de- tract from the flow of another. The water will be run into the tank under the engine house near the river and then pumped up to the bulldings, gecesi ues CHARGE OF STEALING A Svurr OF CLOTHES.—A young man named David Lecount was in the dock ‘of the Folice Court to-day on the charge of steal- ing a sult of clothes from Arthur Flynn, who Stated that the prisoner had been visiting his ce for some time, and, representing himself to e a dyor, witness cave hima valuable sult of clothes to clean, and the next he saw of them was in a pawn shop.
