Mr. John Hammond, of Detroit, Mich., testifled that in 1877-78 he was employed by Mr. Bartol, the resident of the Washington Gaslight Company, defeat bills tor the incorporation of new gas companies in this District, three of which were He was ‘invited by Mr. to a conference touching pending bills, _ which was held at the house of Mr. John Bailey. After discussion it was decided that only one of the bills was Worthy of consideration. “Mr. Bartol directed the witness to see the purtles in this company and get their proposition as to what they would take for their patent. At the conference Mr. John Batley Was present and offered some modest suggestions. After some time Mr. John Batley drove the wit- ness to the Ebbitt house. Here witness saw the parties Mr. Bartol directed him to wee. He got their Proposition and returned to Mr. Bartol's or ‘or Mr. Balley’s house and advised him of it. Mr. Bailey was also present. The proposition, how- ever, was rejected.
