The famous suit of the Indian heirs of Addison Mowry, to recover property in Pittsburg val- ued at 1,500,000, was called for trial in the United States circuit court before Judge But- ler, of the eastern district yesterday. A young balf-breed girl and her mother, who respectively claim to be the daughter and widow of Mowry, are the claimants for the greater portion of the property. 4 NUMBER OF CHIPPEWA INDIANS were present as witnesses. They were dressed in elvilized garb, with the exception of one, who, in addition to his regular custom, wore fanci- fully leggings and regalia and long brass ear- rings hanging from his ears. The men were stalwart specimens and show the effects of civilization by haying allowed their whiskers to grow. One of the witnesses was a woman, very pleasant looking, and stylishly attired in a black costume. Her hat was trimmed with tich tips and around her neck was a fine silk arf. All the Indians were from the vicinity of naw City, Mich. The first witness was the most important one which the plaintiffs have. name is Seth Witey. He Isa magistrate of naw. As being a southern Italian he was received most joyously, and this fact not improbably gave a fresh impulse to the ambition to distinguish himself by seeking to explore yet unknown seas. A project was started for send- ingan expedition to the Antarctic ocean. Lieut. Bove was to be the commander of it, and he and his companions left this country for South America ona kind of preparatory voyage. They had just returned, haying landed in Genoa, and the following details with which the Journals furnish us may afford some pleasant reilef after the hot discussions on the cloture: ‘As is well known,” says the Journalist, “there has been much discussion about the existence of a gigan- tic race of Patagonians, as to whose stature many were disposed to doubt the report of Ma- gellan. But in wandering oyer Terra del Fuego our travelers found human craniums and bones of such an enormous size as to prove the existence of @ race which has now disappeared, and thus attest the veracity of Mageilan. In those regions there is a river, the Santa Cruz, almost unknown. Fitz Roy and Darwin alone within afew years have navigated it in part. There is no’ ize on the coast which does not record a shipwreck. Every part was covered with broken planks, masts snapped in pieces, ironwork twisted by the violence of the waves. Gold medals were given to Lieuteuant Bove and to the com- mander of the Pietrabuena, while silver medals were given to Professor Lovisato and Captain Corla. “> Curious A A prisoner who gave his name as James Smith was arraigned in the Jefferson market police court yesterday, charged with conspiracy to blackmail Ludwig Baumann, of the firm of Baumann Brothers, furniture dealers in Eighth avenue and in 14th street. Mr. Baumann sald that he had received several letters signed by Miss Emma L. Roberts, in one of which he was charged with having betrayed the writer. It was stated that he would be punished if he did not make reparation. The letters were a great surprise to Mr. Baumann, and he kept them to await further developments. He received the first letter on Thursday, and in it was another letter addressed to Mr. Mars The inclosed letter was opened, and was found to contain a request for an ‘Interview. The next day another letter, ten page in length, was received from Miss Roberts. This letter was hand- ito Justice Bixby yesterday as a part of the evidence against the prisoner. The writer asks for the return of private papers contained in the pocket-book stolen from her on Noyember 21, and directs that they should be sent to the “school or to the Brooklyn post office, in my right name.” She asserts that the first note that she received from Mr. Baumann asked for the society of a “reiined, cultured and respect- able lady. A conversation could do no harm, and might result to our mutual benefit.” She then states that in the interview with him noth- ing was said about the duties that she would have to perform, except that she would soon be able to save 2500 for tke relief of her infirm mother. The second time that he met her she alleges that he took her to a disorderly house, and stole her pocket-book and brutally assaulted her. Since then he had failed to meet her, and she did not know where to address him, but while shopping the day befere she saw’ him standing in his store. MISS ROBERTS’ “MISTAKE.” On Saturday night a boy handed a letter to Mr. Bailmann and sald that it had been sent by alady. The letter was signed by Miss Roberts, and simply stated that she had made a mistake in sending the letters to Mr. Baumann, asked tor return of the long letter, and censured him for opening the letter addressed to Mr. Marsh. A clerk in the store followed the boy, and saw him speak to aman at 14th street and 6th avenue. A policeman was subsequently called and the man was arrested. He gave the name of Smith, but said that was not his right name. He concealed that, he said, be- cause he was an innocent victim in’ the Religious Wranglers.
