New York, Sept. 8—Jessie Maillard, a young woman who was arrested for disorderly conduct ona charge by Joseph J. Levi, a lace Importer, was arraigned to-day in the Tombs police court! Jessie claims that Levi Is the father of her child, but this he dented, and declared that the chitd had died. She was discharged on the charge of dis- orderly conduct, but Levi sought to have her held on a charge of perjury, in swearing that her child by Levi was likely ‘to bo a burden on the state When she knew that the child was dead. New York, Sept. 8.—Tho Post's financial article says:—The Stock Exchange markets have been fenerally quiet thus far to-day. ‘The share specu- lation, however, has shown more animation than for several days past, and In some stocks a lange business has been done, notably in Read- ing, Northern Pacific, Louisville and Nashville, St. Paul, Lake Shore and Texas and Pacific. The market Opened strong, but soon be- came weak and declined 413s per cent. After the first hour there was a decided change fn the tem- per of speculation and an advance of ¥ to1\ per cent Was recorded, an upward movement being led by Reading and Louisville and Nasliville, each of which advanced 14 per cent, the former on enormous transactions. CHARGED WITH CRUELTY TO ANIMAIS.—James Burk was charged by Agent King, of the Humane society, in the Police Court, this morning, with cruelty to animals, in overloading and driving a horse when overloaded. Mr. King testified that yesterday he discovered the defendant with a horse hitched to a cart loaded with a ton of coal, at the area leading to the Post OMice department, driving him up an incline of 15 or 20 degrees. ‘The court Said that it was shown that the Lorse drew the load up the grade, and it was not shown that ‘there was any cruelty in the case, and ne would dismiss the charge. “Andrew Banks, a colored cart driver, was pul on trial for the same offense. The following oarsmen entered for the three- mile single scull race, at Halifax, N.S., yesterdays Hosmer, of Boston; Lee, of New Jersey; Conley, of Hallfax; McInenery and Driscoll, of Mass.; Hamm and Smith, of Halifax; Platsted, Boston. Lee and Plaisted, however, did not pear. All started well together. Hamm, who led at the end of a mile, had trouble with one of his oar-locks, and had to make a brief stop. Hosmer got on the home-stretch with a slight fol- lowed by Smith and Conley, Hamm fourth. After a fine spurt for the lead between Hosmer and Con- ley It was gained by the latter, Hosmer aj exhausted.
