MACHIAVELLI'S REPENTANCE ‘Machiavelli has generally been called so wicked from Peopte’s mistaking the design of his writings. This is Cocch:'s opinion, who also informs us that the best traditions concerning Machiavelli are that he was a good honest man in his way of living. His familiar letters are now in Florence, and there are several thingsin w/ “them that show him to have been a good sort of man. Hekept the best company. There were sev- eral societies of men in Florence who profess a greater strictness and a higher love of religion than ordinary. ‘They were asort of voluntary religious societies. Mach- lavelii belonged to one of theso confraternities. They used to meet once a week for devotion, and among other ‘good things one of the society mado a moral discourse or sermon to the rest. There are etill extant several of these discourses of Machiavelli's, and one on repent- ance, epoken by him in the confraternity he belonged to, which unmistakably proves that he was truly re- pentant of whatsoever evil he did, and that the begin- ning of his repentance was contemporary with his dis- covery of the elevating, soothing and beneficent inspi- rations of SANFORD’ GINGER.
