SATURDAY'S BOAT RACE IN THS EASTERN BRANCH. The working boat race between Mansfield and Lewis, of East Washington, and Payne and White, of West Washington, on the Eastern Branch, Sat- urday afternoon, Was one of the most interesting contests seem {n this vicinity forsome time. At the Start the East Washington boys took the lead and maintained it untill the turning stake was almost reached, when Payne and White closed up the gap. The boats tamed almost together, but the Georgetown crew forged ahead a couple of lengths. About a half mile from the stake Mansfield and Lewis mace a desperate spurt and again gained the lead. ‘The Georgetown boys pulied hard to close up. ‘This they were unable to~ do, for White couldn't keep his eyes in the boat and the Georgetown stroke grew quite ragged. When within a quarter of a mile of the finish they buekled down to their work, rowing beautifully, and gained Tapldiy. ‘The spt was begun too late, howey"r, and. the East Washington boat crossed the line one-half length ahead tn 17:51, the Georgetowa boys only a few seconds behind. The letter of Coroner Patterson tothe District Commissioners, in advocacy of the construction of a morgue at the new fifth police station-house, was referred by the Commissioners to Bullding Inspector Entwisie, who, after examination of the whole subject, reports that the surplus of the ap- propriation above the cost of the new statton- jouses Will be required for fencing, paving and the erection of stables for the accommodation of the horses of the mounted police. Hensey. He hurried tothe place,and found a col- ored man, who afterwards gave his name as James Jackson, in a fight with a mahogany colored woman, named Emma Jackson.
