OPENING PROCEEDINGS IN CHICAGO TO-DAY. Curcaco, August 23—The National prohibition convention met in Farwell hall this morning at 10 o'clock, some 300 delegates being present. "Some of the ‘states were represented very largely, and some of the more distant ones not at all.” Gideon T. Stewart, of Ohio, chairman of the National prohibition’ reform executive committee, called the convention to order and in a brief speech said that Inmany localities and states the prohibition- ists had burned their bridges Vehind them by cut- ting loose from other parties, which had arrayed north and south against each other, The prohibi- tionists wanted a. party of honesty, of honor, and they wanted the burial of these crime-stained and blood-stained parties. Rey. John Russell, of Michigan, was elected tem- porary chairman, He also spoke favoring a grand national prohibition party. Phopbe Cozzens, of St. Lou's, and Mary B. Willard, of Chicago, were chosen secretaries. Mr. Young, representing one of tho three Iowa delegations, asked if delegates not committed to a third perty movement, though in full sympathy with prohibition, were to be exclude. CUMBERLAND COALTRADE.—The shipments from the mines of the Cumberland coal region for the Week ended Saturday, August 19, were 18,004 tons, and for the year to'that date 600,779 tons, a de- crease of 669,471 tons ‘as compared with the cor- responding period of last year. ‘The coal carried on the Chesapeake and Ohio canal was: Week 1,914 tons, year 25,994 tons; decrease from last year 259,025 tons. ‘Town Notes.—Owing to the slope of the pavement between the car track and curb on the south side of Bridge street, between High and Congress, not a day passes but one or more horses fall thereon, As many as three have been seen down atone time, This should be remedied...
