THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON August 16, 1SS2. ‘The Evening Star has a regular. permanent. bona fice daily circulation more than trebic that of any ether daily paper published iv Washington. and eaual to that of all the ether daily papers here ndded together. ———— TRE Stan office is connected with the Telephone Ex- @snze. Advertisements, orders for the paper by mai! Ste ctherwize. news, or any information or business an Levent day or nizht, free of charge. — ———— Persons icaving the city for the summer can have THE Erax msiled to their address, postpaid, and changed as often as desired, for fifty cents a month, invariably in advance. Another Richmond has entered the poiltical Meld In Virginia, thus still further complicating the already many-sided situation in that state. ‘The committee of colored men appointed by the Convention at Petersburg which, in behalf of the colored people, formally approved the coalition With the readjusters last year, met yesterday and Bominated Mr. J. B. ax, of Alexandria, one of Their own race, for Congressman-at-large. This seems to signify some feeling of dissatisfaction among the colored people with the existing polit- feal rule in the state. The platform upon which Mr. Syphax runs declares, tn the name of the col- Ored voters, that the Mcht for political emanctpa- tion ts not yet won, “nor ean we ever consent to De used as tools by new political masters.”_ The Tater clause 1s aimed directly at the coalition Bosses, The men who compose this committee Bad influence enough Inst year with the colored People to take them into the coalition, and now, It tsevident, they propose to employ it to get them Out of it. The complaint of the colored voters of Wirginia is that they have not received their pro- Pershare of the fruits of the victory wi Year. There are now two colored candidates for @ongressman-at-large—Dawson, straight-out re- Publican, and Syphax, independent republican. John S. Wise is the readjust coalition cand!- @ate, running upon a pledg pport the adinin- istration if elected, and Massey ts in the fleld as ¢ Gemocratic-readjuster, pletged to act with the @emocrats. If the colored voters in any numbers Support Dawson or Syphox, or both, then the de. Feut of Wise is almost a foregone conclusion, the colored vote 1s counted fn his caleulitions of Buecess. Meantime Congressman Fulkerson, in Southwest Virginia, the readjuster strongholl, !3 Father undoing the coalition. He refuses to be ound by any of the party leaders’ promises to the Fepublican administration and criticises Mahone Yor making such an alliance. Fulkerson’s district 48 populated almost entirely by whites, former @emocrats, and he apparently proposes to save is own congressional bacon, regardless of the coalition. ———__~««» —__- ‘There are five state tickets In the field in Penn™ sylvania, viz: the regular republican, independent republican, democratic, labor, and the prohibition. In forecasting the result of the election all these ekets must be considered. Ordinarily in Penn- ‘sylvania verx@tle interest is given to these side- Issue tickets, as the few thousand votes they com- mand do not have any bearing upon the result; Wut this year every vote counts, and a few @housand more or less than usual for the labor tieket or the prohibitionists may indirectly make oF mar the fortune of the two leading parties. A Prominent demoerat, ex-Congressman Hopkins, of Pittsburg, who was the leading candidate against Pattison, for the gubernatorial nomination, estt- Mates the vote for the independent ticket at 300,000; for the prohibitionists at from 12,000 to 18,000; for the labor ticket at from 30,000 to 40,000; for Beaver, regular republican, 275,000; and for Pattison, democrat, 300,000. He admits, how- ever, that the labor vote 13 very uncertain; That the number cast for that ticket ‘will depend largely upon whether or Bot the labor troubles continue until The election. It is tobe taken for grant-d that ‘this calculation ts as favorable to the democrats as ‘She outlook warrants. It gives Pattison a plural- ity of only 25,000 over Beaver, putting the inde- Pendent vote at 100,000. The stalwarts claim that Stewart will not poll over 50,000 at the very out- ide, thus leaving a margin of 50,000 republican Votes between thelr estimate and that of Mr. Hop- Kins, from which Beaver might draw enough to ‘wipe out the advantage accoried to Pattison tn The democratic calculation. Then, the labor vote Might exceed the Hopkins figures, drawing more Of its strength from the democrats than from the Fepublicans; or, it might fall below those Ngures, the vote going direct to Beaver rather than to “Armstrong, the labor candidate. The latter con- tingency ts not very probable, however. Arm- Strong Is a popular representative of the working- men. and will, no doubt, recetve a Mberal support from them, notwithstanding there 1s no possibility Of his election. But should the vote for Stewart fall short of the Independents’ estimate it 1s not a certain thing, by any means, that tt will signify a Yeturn of independents to the regular party If it shall appear necessary in order to defeat Beaver, some thousands of the Independents may Vote directly for Pattison. Hence Pattison may Hican votes pe #3 deserted from him through th Movement and by means of other political engl- eering. — ———<+>+____ for the acceptance of such favors by public servants.
