Addicks, wife of Passed Assistant Pay- master Joseph T. Addicks, U. 8. N., to-day, through Mr. If. W. Garnett, filed her answer to the bill of divorce filed by him afew months ago. In wis paper she dentes that her residence at the time of Ming the petition was unknown to petitioner, for she had written him after having left this country for Ragland tn February last at his request, for the purposes of economy in Iiving, and inforsaed him that she was going to Dresden. She says that while living at 1405 H street she found petitioner one night sticking his cane down the baby’s throat, and she seized it and offered to strike him. She admits that she locked the door several times, for the reason that he was druak and wanted to ‘go out and stay all night. he states that petitioner's pay having been Stopped for about eight months she was forced to use her own money for their support; that having learned that he bad been paying such assiduous attentions to a young lady friend as to call for in- rference on ihe part of a member of her famtly She taxed the petitioner with the fact, and he Tepited, “—— — you, Ewish Icould marry her and then I would have some money.” She says that le repeatedly told her that he must marry a rich wife to get bonds for his next promotion, and it was onty an secident that had kept him ‘from marrying the young lady friend referred to, and he wished he had married her; thaf, he has often sald to defendant: “—— — ‘you; I wish you were and then I could marry —,” (naming this young Indy friend); that he declared this female friend loved him, ‘and he has sald to defendant: ——— you; I’ wich you were dead, so that I could marty her.” Mrs. Addicks says that it 1s her belief that petitioner's object is to obtain a divorce to marry this lady.
