The suddenness of the unexpected act almost paralyzed the audicnee. Rev. Father O’Suliivan, ‘who Was at the time officiating at the altar, seized hold of her arm to prevent further destruction, when she tried to disrobe the priest, declaring her mission to be the destruction of idols and disrob- ing of priests. LICENSE AGENT RAFF’S SERVICES. OFFICE OF THE ATTORNEY FOR THE DISTRICT > CoLee WASHINGTON, July 17, 1892. Commissioners, D. €.:—Gentlemen: I take great pleasure in calling your attention to the effective work of Mr. Henry Raff during the fiscal year that has just ended, in respect to the enforce- ment of the license lawa In the great number of | cases presented by Mr. Raff for prosecution, very rarely has there been a failure of conviction—he having had a clear conception of the kind of evi- dence required, and success In obtaining the same. Because of the unusual success In the prosecutions in the early part of the year, persons found doing business without a license, !n most every case, would obtain their licenses Father than go to trial: Especially 1s this true in the case of commerciai agents, and I am informed that the Increase in Tevenue from that source alone amounts to #1 Vrevious to the safd year real estate and claim agents paid no Heense, and no efforts were made to collect the same, but through the en- deavors of Mir. Raff over $1,200 have been paid Into the Treasury by the real estate agents, and moi than $600 by the claim agents. Through’ his efforts the street car companfes have also been brouzht into court for running their cars without licenses, and the Police Court has held them Mable; these cases are now pending, on appeal, before the Crim- inal Court. I think Mr. Raff very efficient in this branch of the government work, end the large increase in the amount of revenue received for licenses, as {t appears in the books of the ‘Treasurer's office, will best show the effectiveness of his nbor.
