There were three other persons executed at the same time, but the great mterest has always centered in the woman who thus gave up her life on the gallows. After the trial of some weeks the findings of the court martial were approved, and on Thursday, July 6 1865, Gen. Hancock, in com- pany with Gen Hartran(t, visited the condemned im their cells and read the sentences. “Wayne showed no fear. Mrs. Surratt’s daughter was with her early in the morning, and she also saw a gentl-min and gave directions about her woperty. Her spiritual advisers remained. witt sef constantly. Hartrantt advanced to the front and read ‘THE DEATH WARRANT in a loud distinct voice. Words of religious conso- lation were then whispered into the ears of the condemned. The others were similarly bound. Mra.
