The number of new advertisements fm June has already reached 2,101. —— “ Political Assessments.” ‘The approach of an important campaign makes ft incumbent upon the party leaders im Congress. Or at least they feel it to be their duty, to raise political issues and enthuse their followers with partisan eloquence. The subject of “political assessments” received attention in both houses esterday, but in the Senate it was made the most Important question of the day. Mr. Pendleton ‘Supported his resolution condemning assessments for party purposes with a vigorous speech, in ‘which he severely arraigned the republican party and its methods) This led to a spirited debate, and the democratic party was as roughly handled by Mr. Hale as the republican party had been by Mr. Pendicton. Mr. Hale was prepared with sone facts in the history of the democratic party, show- ‘fing that in the days of its power 1t had not scru- Pied to raise money by the assessment plan. ‘The feature of the discussion which attracted Yost interest, perhaps, was the speech of Mr. Van ‘Wyck, himself a republican, criticising the course Of Dis party and of the present administration. ‘The discussion on the part of the republican mem- ers of the congressional committee emphasized the committee's declaration that there was no in- tention of investing their circular call for contri- ‘butions with a compulsory character. Prominent Members of thecommittee unhesitatingly declared hat the circular is a mere request for pecuniary Assistance, which the employes are at liberty to tomply with or refuse, as they see fit. Senator Allison, who has been a member of the Coumittee for some years, in a few remarks yes- terday, produced figures showing that in 1880, with an important presidential election pending, only about 11,060 out of the 100,0C0 or more govern- Ment officers and employés responded with con- tributions; and yet, he sald, nobody has heard of ‘DY OF the 99,000 or more who did not respond hav- Ing been removed from office, thr ed or dis- Surbed because of their non-compliance with the equest of the committee. In that year the Con- Gressional committee “assigned” the collections from government employes in some of the states to the committees of these states, respectively, and perhaps the figures of Mr. Allison did not cover tions to state committees. Whether the intend thetr call for contributions to be ag an assessment or mere :voluntary act, e evident that the sentiment of the coun- try, tn fact, of the republican party {tself, 1s op- Posed to such a system of obtaining money for partisan use. ————_<«+—_____ "The state credit democrats of Tennessee are evi- Gently in earnest in their opposition to the ticket and platform made ty the Nashville convention are determined to nominate a ticket, at thelr convention called for the 11th of text month, upon a platform pledged to the main- Yenance af the debt settlement ratified by the Jegistature oniy a short time ago. This settlement ‘Was proposed by the creditors and accepted by the ‘Wate, and the state credit democrats, led by United States Senator Jackson, will not consent to the re- Pudiation of that agreement, even at the djctation Of their party. With two democratic ttkets in the field, nobody doubts that the result will be the election of the republican ticket, with Gen. Haw- ‘Eins, the present incumbent, at its head. ——_+er ‘Tt seems to be the general opinion in the Senate that Congress will not be ready to adjourn before the 2h or 25th of next month, and it is apparent that the Senate does not intend to be hurried into adjournment for the sake of getting away. The Femarks of Mr. Beck, yesterday, protesting against even considering the subject of adjournment ‘Bntil the Senate can see Its way to the end of the ‘session without being hurried and forced into Working day and night, seemed to meet with quite _ ee approval from hiscolieagues. The indica- ‘are that the Senate committee on appropria- tions will not consent to fixing a day for adjourn- Ment until all the appropriation bills are well on thelr way to final consideration, at least. —s ‘The House having concurred in the Senate amendment to the army appropriation bill fixing ‘the age of compulsory retirement at 61, this ques— tion may be regarded as virtually settled, as there is no doubt, whatever, of the President's approval. ‘Under this provision about twenty officers will be immédlately retired, among whom are Major Gen. McDowell, Surgeon Gen. Barnes and Cois. Benham ‘and Macomb, both the latter of the engineer corps. psi Yowa votes to-day on the adoption of an amend- Ment to the state constitution which absolutely forbids the manufacture or sale asa beverage of any intoxicating Uquor whatever, including ale, wine and beer.
