There were printed and sold of last Saturday's double tesue 19,433 coples. Adver- Users will confer a favor by sending in thetr orders early to insure insertion and proper classification. — ‘The municipal elections In Vinginia yesterday @o not sei to indicate any material disintegra- tion of the coalition movement. Party lines were @s*inctly drawn, and the fight was stubborn in most of the citivs, each side apparently regarding the loval ‘cout-st as preliminary to the coming struggle for Congressmen. In Richmond where here 1s a large democratic majority there was Practically no opposition to. the ticket of that party. In Petersburg, the home of Senator Ma- hone, the coalitionists have eiected their candi- date for mayor, over the present incumbent, who Was the democratic candidate. In fact, the result | in that city Is a decided readjuster or coalition | twtumph, ali the city officers of that party having Deen elected by large majorities, In Norfoik the heaviest vote ever polled was called out, and the democrats made marked gains. This was proba- Diy due to the fact that there Is not a harmonious coalition of the republicans and readjusters in that city. That is the home of Congressman Dezen- dort, who opposes coalition, and favors a straight- out republican organization. The demoerats made & pretty clean sweep in Lynchburg, though the coalitionsts seem to have held their vote of last Year. These local elections show that the con- gressional contest !n Virginia ts going tobe de- termined and aggressive. The democratic organs Have been endeavoring to prejudice the ex-con- federates agoinst Senator Mahone because of his ‘voto to refer the bill to repeal the law prohibiting ‘those who participated in the rebellion from hold- ing positions in the army and navy, to the judiciary committee; but,so faras the municipal elections 0, they do not Indicate that his int Bpsngen Taaterlally weakened. Of course thaseveral cifte from which election returns have Yeon ‘sHiet¥ are but a small part of the state, vote in ‘hose cities probably, reflects the general coalition mentimeot. The result of the congressional.con- ‘test may be very signally effected by WITEceon, of the straightout repubiicans If the mo¥emefit, al- Teedy inaugurated, for a reorganization of the re- publican party meets with success, republican can- Gidates for Congress wil! be nominated in many, and perhaps, all the districts. This would bring about another triangular contest, and consider- ably upset present calculations as to the outcome of the struggie. ~~» ____ ‘The ticket nominated Wednesday by the tndepen- Gent republicans of Pennsytvania ts made up of men who are not professional politicians, and this will probabiy be considered a point in its favor by the peopie of the state. The convention was care- ful to ascertain of its candidates beforehand ‘whether or not they would accept, and in this course sound political judgment was manifested. ‘To have nominated men on trust would have been & mistake, for it would have had a somewhat de- moralizing effect for the candidates, after the ad- Jourament of the convention, to refuse to run. It 4s apparent that the managers of the independent Movement realize that they have a wily foe to fight, In the “machine,” and that they are on the watch forattacks from front and rear. The plat- form declares firm attachment to republican prin- ciples, and makes civil service reform and opposi- tion to the patronage and spoils system the chief issue of the contest. rr ‘The House joint resolution making a deficiency appropriation of $16,000,000 for pensions passed the Senate Wednesday. This added to the $50,000,006 originally appropriated make a total of $66,000,000 for the current year. The estimate for the next fiscal year 1s $10,000,000, and Congress will have to Sppropriate that sum to meet the payments it has Promised in the way of pensions. These enor- mous expenditures are mainly under the “arrears” act, passed several years ago, giving to pensioners Dack pay on arrears.) When the bill was pending ‘the estimated amount of its cost was from about $25,009,000 to $10,000,000. Instead of. decreasing, ‘the payments under the law have been increasing annually. ——____<+o+—___ The Philadelphia republican papers, the Press, Inquirer, North American and Evening Telegraph all agree that t will net do to pooh-pooh the in- dependent movement. The Press says: “Friend and foe alike must concede that the convention ‘was strong im character, strong in distinct pur- Pose, strong in high principle—nay, more, strong in tts sincere and unqualified republicanism.’ ‘The Ledger (independent) says that “the man who makes up estimates of the probable result of the November election in Pennsylvania and fails to take im the independent movement as a most Ln- Portant and possibly decisive factor, will make a Gelusive reckoning for himself and for whatever party he chances to represent. The movement is Teal, widespread and intense.” ee The latest reports from the peach crop are that the yield in Maryland and Delaware will be abun- @ant, while farther north, and especially in the Hudson river valley, recent frosts have killed ali | that was left by the earlier cold spells GPa ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC. _ Hpgrs. As we said yesterdsy—tho first thing to be done is tobe truthful in your advertisements. The second—HAVE WHAT YOU ADVERTISE, that is to eay—havecnough to suit and fit all who may call for the article advertised. If the quantity is not large STATE IT in your advar- ‘tisement. To-day we want to add that one of the greatest delusions of many advertisers are that they imagine the pablic believe whatever they chose to say in their advertisements, Now it is simply ridiculous to announce that your goods are always sold at about one- half of the price others ask for theirs. Frequently we find it desirable to get rid of a lot or two of goods. And we apply the remsdy—the best in the world to get ria of goods, A LOW PRICE, but we do not on these ocon- sions say that the entire stock is marked in the same way, for this in plain English would be lying. We think ‘advertising pays us, for the reason that we have the largest stock, always have what we advertion, we tell you all we know about the goods we sell, have every facility for your proper examination of them, and after you examine them at home and concinde you erred in your Judgment we refund the purchase money without any conditions whatecever. Recently we advertised that purchasers of Children’s Suits could procure an extra pair of Pants of same goods if they desired them. There were no less than twenty persons who imagined the extra pair were to cost nothing. ‘There are a few people in this world who imagine theirdollar has a greater purchasing power than their neighbors. They find out their mistake ins house like ours, where the same price prevails for all. ‘To-day we placed on our counters an clewant Hatr line Cessimere pair of Pants, from the emallest to the largest size. ‘The price is Five Dollars. They sre better value than any five dollar pants we have had for years. 4. SAKS & CO, mys ‘316 axp 318 SzvantH Stexer. RPortr OF THE CONDITION OF THE FARMERS' & MECHANICS’ BANK, OF GEORGETOWN, D.
