New York, May 9—The return denies that Mrs, Scoville ts in custody of, or restrained by John W. Guiteau of her liberty, and says that he does not know of her whereabouts, and therefore he could not produce her in court. AN AFFIDAVIT FROM MR. SCOVILLE. Mr. Townsend then made an application to have the return traversed, and read an affidavit of Mr. Scoville, in which the latter still declares himself of the bellef that his wife is in John W. Gulteau’s custody. He said he wrote and telegraphed to John W. Guiteau here in regard to her, but the latter would give him no information. Having noticed that she was to lecture here, he came on from Chicago, hoping to find her. ‘He Went to the Astor houré,and asked the clerk for her, but John W. directed that official not to per- mit him to see his wife. A few minutes after- wars he met his wife and child on the street with John W. Guiteau. She said she was on her way to lecture, and not to talk to her then, as it would disturb her mind. WHEN HE LAST SAW HER. He, however, obtained a promise from her to meet him at the hotel after her lecture, and that was the last time he saw her. He reiterates the fact that since her brother's trial Mrs. Scoville has shown signs of insanity, and declares that he and his wife livea happily for twenty-nine years until the trial of Charles J. Guiteau. Had it not been for his devotion to her, he says, he would not have left his profession in hicago and devoted so much time without fee todefend her brother. Her friends and children in Chicago say that when she left that city she was not in her proper mind. Friends in Washington had spoken of her strange conduct. His anxlety regarding her and the child was un- endurable, and he w: THE POLICE HOPEFUL OF CAPTURING THE ASSASSINS. Dvsury, May 9.—All the Dublin newspapers ap- pear in mourning. ONE OF TBE CONSEQUENCES OF MAJOR TWINING’S DEATH. Some embarrassment has been caused at the District Commissioners’ office by a verbal commu- nication from the first controller of the Treasury, communicated to them yesterday through Mr. Walker, of the controller's office, to the effect that the last amount drawn by requisition of the Dis- trict Commissioners from the Treasury prior to Major Twining’s death should be covered back into the Treasury, and no more paid out until a new engineer Commissioner is appointed and the board of Commissioners reorganized. ‘The Commissioners and the District controller regard the consequent condition of affairs as a dead-lock, and no accounts will be audited and no check drawn until the verbal order given by Mr. Walker is reversed by the controller or Mr. Walker, and it 1s not probable that the President 38th intantry, First Lieut Wm. PARNELT. In the house of commons Mr. Gladstone arose and with great emotion moved an adjournment. He said the blackness of the erime and the horror it exelted throughout the entire kingdom were unparalleled. AS far as the government were concerned, said Mr. Gladstone, all previous ar- Tangements must be recast. Mr. Gladstone stated ‘that he would on Thursday ask the house for leave to introduce a measure for the repression of crime in Trelana, and believed he woud be assisted from all quarters of the house. On an early day he would introduce a measure dealing with the ques- tion of arrears of rent. Mr. Parnell expressed the detestation of all Irishmen for the crime, and said he believed that it was committed in order to frustrate his cause, He did not deny that the government might be compelled to take steps to restore order in Ireland. He was of the opinion that the crime was the work of those to whom he had always been op- posed. The house then adjourned until Thursday, re DIED. COHAN. In Georgetown, D.C..
