HOW HE OBTAINS FRAUDULENT WRECK REPORTS. ‘The rather pecullar career of an impostor ha: come to light im the office of the general superin- tendent of the life-saving service. It is not know? who he is, but it is supposed that he Is “a seafar- ing man.” He travels around the country with 2 well-concocted story of shipwreck, loss of all hix Property, and injury to his person. As a proof 0% his story he produces a “ wreck report” made out in regular form in some customs office, and it ap- pears that he always has a report to sult the local-" ity in which he ts working the game, but they are all fraudulent. According to law the reports of all the wrecks that take place in our waters must be sent to Mr. 8. I. Kimball, superintendent of the life-saving service, and a complete record 13 kept. From this’ record it appears that the game of this seme Impostor was Drought to light several years ago, when Tae Star published an account of his attempt to tinpose upon the people of Alexandria, with a shipwreeked story, and also how he applied “for relief to the "Masonic relict com- mittee—with no success, however. His man- her of proceeding is Somewhat as follows: = makes his appearance at a customs office and ass the ofiieer to whom he can make a statement ‘ssel, Which he represents to few days previous. He e story of how his Vessel was struck ner and was sunk, and he and scaped with their lives. @he hands him a blank wreck report and tells c Lin to fill itout. The man says that he is unabie to write, as his rigut hand or arm (whichever happens to be bandaged) was badly hurt at the ime of the wreek, and will tie officer be kind enouch to fil out the report from the story told, which fs usually done, and the master and owner of tue lost ship, which he always clalins to be, signs with a cross (iis mark). ‘Then he asks for a copy of the report. If any questions are asked lie tells that he wa it asa souventr or for identifica- His request 1s generally granted, and he out armed with false eredentials that will 0% [likely have a good deal of weight with peopic Inthe, neighborhood of the customs ctfice infhosed upon, where the officer who |made out the report ts probably well-known, Th re have been placed on file recently three of ese fraudulent reports, which have so much milarity, that without doubt they are the work the saine man. In one inade out at Philadel- February 1th, 188%, he claims to be the owner of the Sehooner Mildred see, which. was run into and sunk by the steamer Roman, near Cape Charles. In this report his name Is W. O. John- son. Another report, from the New York collec- tion district, of March 26th, 1882, shows that his vessel was the Millard Lee, which was run into and sunk by the steamer Bristol. Upon Investl- gation it was found that at the time of the sup- Posed disaster the Bristol was lying at her dock. Here his name is George Robinson. A third port, made at Newark, N.J., states that the soner John H. Morgin registered at George- town, D.C., collided with an unknown steamer and Was sunk. In this case his name is Georze| Johnson. Upon thorough investigation of the Supposed accidents tt was found that there were no such wrecks. By placing the three reports together itcan be readily seen that they come trom the Same source—there are such similarities in the names, localities, tonnage, the manner in which the accident happened, amount of insurance, &c. It could not be imagined at first what the object of the imposition was, but It was thought It could be no other purpose than to obtain the report for begging purposes, No one remembers having see! the man, however. He ts without doubt thes one who told similar stories in 1879, under the allases of Richard Robinson and Richard F. Rob- inson. ———— Amusements, &c. Yesterday the weather caused a falling off in the number of visitors to the Jail to see Guiteau, and consequently he was left to himself the most of the day. Guiteau now has his cell quite neatly ar- ranged, and the small table which formerly was near the window is now kept In the mlddle of the floor, giving him room for his chair behind It, so as, to face the door. Mrs. Garfleld’s illness began next day. At last Tuesday's reception, when both ladies assisted the President In receiving his guests, the wives of Secretaries Lincoln and Chandler met for the first time since they were girls together at the National hotel, in the spring Of 1865, seventecn years ago. Their not having met earlier was an’ accident, due to the illness 0: one in the winter, and the other this spring. The “Evening with Daniel Webster”—a thee tion given by Mr. L. Excellent singing and plano playing added their charms to the occasion, which was a Inost memor- able and enjoyable one throughout. Mr. and “Mrs, Reuben Davis celebrated thelr golden wedding on Tuesday eventng at thelr house, 1516 2th street, A large party, of relatives and friends was present, including’ a number of children. An original poem, appropriate to the ion, was read by thelr son-in-lzw, Mr. Henry riftin, of Baltimore, The company separated ata late hour, wishing the venerable couple many Teturns of the happy anniversary. It has been the subject of comment here that wine seems to have become an unfashionable bev- erage at evening parties other than dinners given in Washington. At few of the spring parties or Teceptions has there been any wine, and even claret or other kinds of punch have often been omitted. There are many who honestly prefer iced lemonade ata party as a refreshment when Suffering from overheated and crowded rooms, as wine and punch, even when takea moderately, usually at such ‘times increase the discomfort caused by an impure atmosphere. ‘The greatest interest 1s felt in the tea party In ald of the Garfleld memorial hospital, to occur in the rotunda of the Capitol this evening, when a distinguished compyny fs sure to be present, and every opportunity will be offered for a pleasant evening including dancing and a promenade con- cert by the Marine band. ‘There are many gloomy hearts in Washington to-day among those who expected to enjoy the social pleasures of the day and evening on account. Among the number of Saturday evening enter- talninents which have of late become so attractive, perhaps none have contributed more of pleasure to the participants than the complimentary musicale given last Saturday evening at the Tesidenge of Representative Washburne, on Rhode Island avenue, by the puptls of Miss Clare. The spacious mansion was thrown open to the parents and friends of the performers, and the elegant reception room was filled during the evening by a host of notable people, among whom were ex- Secretary and Mrs. Bhilue, Miss Blaine and Mi Dodge: ex-Attorney General Williams; Mrs. Cam- eron and Miss Cameron; Justice Matthews and daughters; Mrs. Senator Sherman and her pretty niece; Gen. and Mrs. Parke; Miss Freeman; Judge Aldis and wife; Admiral and Mrs. Almy; Dr. Gar- nett and MisseGarnett; The wives of’ Senators Platt, Mahone and Pendleton; Prof. Coffin; Mr. and Mrs. C!icrles Payson; Mrs. General Paul; Mrs, Commissioner Morgan and daughters; Mr. and Mrs. Nathaidel Wiison; Mr. and Mrs’ Reginald Fendall, and Mrs. Washbu The lengthy pro- ruin Was listened to with rapt attention by the large audience, and each of the performers, some of whom looked hardly large enough to reach the plano keys, received the generous applause their playing ‘so richly deserved.
