In reply to a letter from Hon. B. H. Rollins,of the Senate, of April 24th, enclosing a petition of citi- zens asking for the extension of Vermont avenue, in the direction of the Soldiers’ Home, and asking the views of the street to the public by the ly without reference to any plan, and as the bumper of houses continued to increase ft be- came evident that an extension of the city was es onthe north of itin which the streets d no relation to each other or to the plan of the city. At some future day the public convenience will demand that these Strects shall be connected and strafghtencd at x ment of the Comm! P Of great accuracy and lance Hal to form any plans‘n this con- nection the Commissioners submitted an estimate in 1879 for $5,000 for beginning the survey for such a map. The survey has progressed as rapidly as its accuracy will permit, the work being done by officers of the coast survey. The triangulation of the entire District is completed, and topograhical Work has been carried along the northern edge of the city, for a width of about one mile, from the vicinity of 6th street to beyond Georgetown. The mep of a portion of the county between wth and ith streets extended was furnished to the Commissioners about a year since, and the maps extending to George- town are expected during the next month. It was tie intention of the Commissioners to maiure a plan for streets, north, of the city, conforming 1a neral termi to the plan of the city approved by n. Washington, in August, 1791, and to submit this plan to Congress for its approval, with the Tecommendation that a law be passed requiring future sub-divistons of county property to conform toit. Although the plan has not yet been ma- tured in detail, _yet on that portion’ between the head of New Jersey avenue and 14th street ex- tended, the Commissioners are agreed as to the ints. en That New Jersey avenue should be extended through LeDroit Park across 7th street and up the valley of a small stream in that vicinity to Mth Street extended. 2% That Vermont avenue should be extended in a straight line to 7th street extended. The desirability of extending Vermont avenue through the sub-divisions already made beyond 7th street has not yet been fully considered. The Tines of two avenues as extended are shown on the plan inclosed. The estimated cost of ex- tending Vermont avenue and improving itis about $70,000. As to the desirability of these extensions the Commissioners entertain no question. New Jer- Sey avenue will give a direct line from the Capitol to the two great roads—7th and 1fth streets—lead- ing into the county; Vermont avenue Will give a diers’ Home, and the intersection of the avenues hear 8th street extended will give a part or reser-. vation of the character found in various sections of the city. It is proper to Say that so long as the streets of this city are In their present con- dition—ten miles being covered with rotten wood pavements anda large amount with- out any pavement at all—the Commission- ers do not feel justified in recommending an appropriation of so large a portion of the cur- rent revenues as $70,000 to the extension of these avenues. If the United States will appropriate from the U. 8. Treasury the amount for the exten- sion of Vermont avenue, or tf it will make an ad- vance to the District, ‘to be paid from current revenues at a subsequent time. then this tmprove- ment which, as suggested in the Commissioners’ letter ed to the committees of the Senate and House on the District of Columbia on the 4th ultimo, then this improvement, which is certainly 80 desirable, can be 2ecomplished at once, other- wise it should be postponed until the rotten wood 1s disposed of, and certain of the streets, such a3 Pennsylvania avenue sout New York avenue, Q street, paved.” st, Maryland avenue, and other streets are —— The Fleming Safe Burgiars.
