TESTIMONY OF 4 VICTIM IN THE CRIMINAL OOURT. This morning Im the Criminal Court, Judge Wylie, a “bunco” case was tried—that of the United States agninst John Long alias Cornelius Lynch, for the larceny of $90 from Elezear 8. Bart- lett, of Belfast, Allegany county, N.Y., by means of the “buaco” game on the 8th of December last. ‘Mr. A. B. Williams appeared for the defendant. Mr. Bartlett, an elderly gentieman, testified that on the day in question while stopping at the St. Charles he was accosted on the street by a young man Who claimed to know him,and also to be from Belfast and after some conversation witness was invited to go to the young man’s office on Missouri avenue, between 3d and 434 streets. He believed that the defendant was the party he met there and he was introduced. John White testified that the game has been played on race tracks for twenty years, and it was a fair gambling game, with the percentages in favor of the dealer. ‘The jury retired about one o'clock. SOCIETY NOTES. Entertainments are given every evening to Mr. and Mrs. Victor Drummond. This evening they will spend with the British Minister and Miss West at the British legation. They will leave for ‘New York next Friday morning, and sail for Eng- land May 10th. After visiting his relatives there Mr. Drummond will take his bride to Vienna, where he will be attached to the British embassy. In the board of aldermen President Downham presided, and there Were six aldermen present. In the lower house twelve counciimen were present, and President Douzlas presided. An appropriation of $1,500, made last year, for the erection of a new engine, house for the Columbia engine, was increased to $2,700, on the recommendation of the finance com- lulttee. $500 was added tothe appropriation for Streets. The fire laws were amended so as to fix the annual meeting of fire wardens in May, instead of in March, 50 that the close of the fiscal year of that department may coincide with the close of the fiscal year of the city. $100 was appropriated to meet extraordinary expenses of the board of health In putting up hospital and stamping out Smallpox.
