AO ae 4 THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON The vector Sear has a reantan, verenneet. boua fae dxitv circulation more than trebdle that of any other daily paper published in Washington, and equal to that ef all the ether daily papers here ndded together. = ‘Te Stan office is connected with the Telephone Ex- (henge. Advertisements, orders for the paper by mat ‘End otherwise, news, or any information or business ectaeet es ween free of charge. ‘The Senate yesterday passed a House ‘bill which siveeps out of the way of future Congresses amass Of claims It was an “omnibus” bill for the pay- ment of small war claims. In the measure 1,359 persons are named a8 the beneficiaries, together with the amount that shall be paid each. The aggregate amountof the bill ts $291,148, and the elsims average about $214, some being as low as $10, anda few running up to $1,000. These claims ‘were for stores end supplies takem during the re- Beltion, mostly from farmers, for the use of the ‘Union army, and they have been before Congress for years. The act under which they are now Enally to be ald was passed In 1864, and provided that after proper exsmination and after being gudited by the Treasury claims of this character from loyal citizens should be paid. There is no question of the President’s approval of the DIL —_++2—___ It fs hinted that the democrats intend to conduct the coming congressional canvas upon the “still- hunt” plan; and if fs not improbable that the re- publicans will do likewise. Indeed, there 1s noth- 4mg over which the politicians can make a fuss. ‘The Chinese question will agitate only certain lo- ealities, and it may, possibly, be settled by action ‘of Congress before the canvass begins. The demo rats cannot with any consistency preach tariff Feform, because they neglected to take any steps fin that direction during the six years they had gontrol of the House, and the two years of which ime they were in the majority in both branches Of Congress, The chances are that the congres- Bional campaign wili be a free-for-all Hght. —_—__—_+e2—__—_ ‘The speech of Mr. Voorhees in the Senate, yes- terday, 1s regarded by some as the opening of a democratic assault upon the foreign policy of the administration. It was a severe arraignment of that policy, and a sweeping condamnation of the course of the State department and Mintster Lowell. Ir it produces any political effect the democrats will, no doubt, endeavor to take advan- tage of it, and we may once more have the ques- tion of the status and rights of foreign-born citi- zens brouzht before the country. —__—_<e»—_—__ A Dill has been introduced In the New York state senate looking to the consolidation of the cities of New York and Brooklyn. Such aconsoli- dation would give this country a populous city, a fival of London; but woulta’t tt be well to sup- ‘Press some of the local political bosses and bum- mers before legislating the two cities into one? ‘They work mischief enough as tt 1s, Dut to bring the Kellys and McLaughiins together in one fleld ‘would be more than the people could stand, unless, ‘happily, they should turn against and destroy each other. ————— Manif{estly Mr. MacVeagh Intends to organize a party by himself, of himself, and for him- sel. He says the political organization f© which he belongs has but three Principles, to all of which he finds himself @pposed; and, of course, the democratic party is Ro better, or he would have been there long ago. ‘Mr. MacVeagh must keep a sharp look out or he ‘will be scooped up fn a flery chariot one of these ays, all unbeknownst to himself, Then what will the country do? ——__<o+—___ Judge Hilton, of New York, has at last discov- ered that he fs not A. T. Stewart. The large dry goods business of A. T. Stewart & Co. is to be ‘@losed ont and wound up at once, and all the mer- chandise and mill properties of the firm are offered for sale. A Sensntion on the Avenue. A PAINTED OBELISK AND AN ADMIRING THRONG. however, such promise of what was to come, that day by day during the progress of the work many hundreds of our citizens stopped and gazed heavenward at the artist, under whose magical touches there seemed to spring up over # bricht blue sky and the most fanciful of clouds. Soon the shapely head of the obelisk (Cleo- patra’s need'e) reared itelf among -the airy castles which seemed to roll back invitingly st its approach. Later tho entire here, of | tie _monament of Feyptian greatness was outlined on the wall, and the wrought a series of mysterious characters the entire length of both sides of the obelisk. Although this paint- ing, as our readers will readily understand, no doubt, is, intended to represent the obelisk now in Central Park, New ¥ork, and which, after keeping silent watch and ward for ages in theland of the Pharoahs, was presented to the city of New York by the Egyptian government, and brought to this country and erected on its present site through the manificence of Willism H. Vanderbilt; still, the artist, Don Yeagaro, with a view to the eternal fitness of things and a love of the beautiful born of his art, bas teken the liberty to present a view of this histo- rieal landmark as it stood in all its glory in the land of the Nile. To that end, therefore, he gives a view in Egypt that ts in itself well worthy of « visit, and which taxes our descriptive powers ina manner which leads us to admit that anything we msy say will fall far short of sn adequate description. The beautiful blue Nile is ecen in the dim gray distance calmly sleeping neath the gulden haze shed by the sun. On its far away banks the great pyramids—thcse mag- nificent tombs of ings—rise in majesty before the be- holder, the plain is lighted up with thet peculiar, balmy glow of the East, an.i interspersed here and there with the graceful palms of that wondrous clime. The paint- tng oceupiev a apace immense in itself, being 45 by 15 fect, 60 that the obelisk (which is painted to the lif: ) comes not farfrom peing as large as the originel. The hieroglyphic like characters which adorn the sides of original are bya stranxe fancy of the artist changed into a puzzle almost as bewildering, and although one need not be “‘up in Sanscrit’* to decipher it, still it re- quires aclear mind and a quick eye to read it. Of the hundreds who thus far have attempted to read the puz- ale, we have.not heard of single person who has suc- ceeded, although we have seen the laughing child forget its hoop or ball to gaze in wonderment upon it; while beside him the gray-haired Senator, may- hap learned savant, who might possibly be able to read Sanscrit inscription, saw no deeper {nto the mystifying lettering, though he gazed with the observant eye of the statesman and scholar, than did the laughing blue eye of the innocent child. The constructions put upon it are as varied as the per- sons who attempt to decipher, and they comefrom ail classes. It is but fair to say their name is lerion. High and low, rich and poor, black and white; they all stop, and look and wonder. The Congressman on his way to or from the Capitol; the stranger idly sauntering to see the sights; the divine or the physician making their rounds; the young ladies out to air their spring bon- nets; Sambo, to whom itis all Greck; and the learned professors from Smithsonian Institute, all look, and all are puzzied and celichted. To the many hundreds who thus turn away sadly disappinted every day wegive the information that a solution of the puzzle, with adescrip- tion of the obelisk and a copy of the new St. Jacobs Oi! calendar for the current year, will be sent post paid, on receipt of a three cent postage stamp, by Mesers. A. Vogeler & Co., of Baltimore, Md., the pro- Prietors of St. Jacobs Oil, the Great German Remedy. We may also add that it was under the su] jon cf that firm that the Obelisk was paiated, and that it is in- tended to show that even as that great historical tri- umph has witnstood the storms of ages, so can St. Ja- cobs Oil stand any and all tests to which it may be put, coming out triumphant, towering over disease and pain; for as the great Pyramids and the Obelisk are to the monumental world so is St. Jacobs Oil, the Great German Remedy, to the medical world; it towers above all other remedial agents, and stands alone, in its great- ness and its surprising power, as an annihilator of pain. St. Jacobs Oil is of recent origin when compared to the Obelisk, but, like that great finger-post of tim, it is fated to last for ages, and win for itself a brighto: and a wider name as time wears and the ages roll on.
