Several witnesses for the defendant testified that the dispute was as to who should pay for the drinks, and O’Donohue attempted to puil Noonan from behind the bar before the latter seized the cleaver and struck O’Donohue, who went off, inaking threats that he would burn the house an get even with him, and on the morning of the hom- icide O"Donohue went to the store of Noonan with a knife and the latter fired at him. A VERDICT OF NOT GUILTY. At about 12:45 Judge Wylle sald that on this evi- dence the jury could not convict, and the district attorney acquiescing, he directed them to find a Verdict of “not guilty,” which was done. ——— The Water Supply Question. IMPORTANT ACTION OF THE SENATE DISTRICT COM- MITTER. Senator Harris, chairman of the sub-District committee on extension of the water works, 1s pressing that improvement with all the energy its importance demands, and the people of the Dis- trict will be very much gratified to learn that the Prospect of a plentiful supply of water is very en- couraging. At the meeting of the Senate District committee today Mr. Harris asked for and ob- tained authority to prepare and report a bill for the extension of the water works. He will draft this Dill at once. It will authorize and direct the Sceretary of War and the Attorney General to secure by contract, if in their discretion that shall be the best and most expeditious method, titles to all the ground necessary for the pro exten- sion of the water works Ir these titles cannot be secured by contract the bill will require the Attor- ney General to {rmediately institute condemna- tion proceedings for the purpose of obtaining the round in that manner. ‘The Secretary of War will directed to commence, as soon as prac- ticable, the work of extending the conduit from “its present terminus to the high grounds north of the city In the vicinity of 6th street extended, and at that point to construct a large reservoir capable of supplying all the water needed. In short, the bill will provide for the im- mediate enlargement of the water works accord- ing to the plan recommended in Senator Harris’ Teport, recently published in THE Stak, and It will provide for the appropriation of ali ‘the money necessary for carrying on the work. ‘The chairman of the District committee, Mr. In- galls, favors Col. Casey’s plan for extending the present main to Lincoln park, and will submit it to the Senate, but, he says, in no spirit of antagomsm. to the other plan. He thinks it will supply the Capitol Hill part of the city with water in a shorter time and at less cost than the other plan. But the inain point in favor of Mr. Harris’ plen is, that It rovides for a permanent supply of water, and at but little more expense than the Casey plan would require. The Harris plan will furnish the city With water for half a century or more, while the other 1s more in the nature of a temporary expe- lent, and while {t would relieve the wants of Cup- itol Hill it would not increase the capacity of the water Works. a District Government Affairs, The Commissioners have fssued an order amend- ing the building regulations of the District by ad- ding to section 23 the provision that projections shall be limited to four feet on streets trom 60 to 80 feet wide; three feet on streets from 50 to 60 feet on streets from 40 to 50 feet wide. Health Officer Townshend received a letter to- from Prof. Baird, thanking him for the con- ation of the records of the fish inspections in shington, adding, “these are becoming more and more important’ in view of the decided in- crease in the supply of shad in the Potomac.” _ Two CRILDREN Suri K yesterday morning, in house No. ‘724 Freeman's alley, where two colored children of Sarah Thomas, colored, were locked in the room, resulted in the death of both of them, from the effects of inhaling smoke. ‘The fire occurred in the second story, It is suppose. by the children play- ing with coals trom the stove, but was soon extin- ned by the police and citizens, and the ehil- dren were removed in an unconsctous condition. The price paid for the lot was $75,000. The lot previously presented to the University for the same purpose by Mr. Corcoran, on the southwest corner of Vermont avenue and street, though most desirable in point of situation, was Judged to be too small as the seat of the building contem- plated by the authorities of the University. We understand that Mr. Corcoran concurred in this opinion, and that he generously contributes $30,000 towards the purchase of the new lot, that sum being the estimate? value of the lot previously given by him, and expressing his continued int est and faith in the future of the University. ‘The authorities hope to break ground for the new building at an early day. ‘The lot is 154 feet on Street by 131 on 15th street, comprising more than 20,000 square feet. —— FURNITURE Sate.—The sale of parlor, chamber and library furniture at the old Club House, south- east corner of 15th and H streets north to- morrow morning, at 10:30 o'clock, offers a rare op- portunity to those tn search of such as are all of the best manufacture.
