PHE SPRING OPENINGS—BEADS TO THE REAR— FRINGES TO THE FRONT—BUT TON STYLEs— ‘WHITE LACES, ETC. Easter 1s at hand. Girsry Bonnets are revived. Rep Vetrs for branettes. PLats SLEEVES with simple cuffs. ‘Tue Princesse effect is in new dresses. Fiower Bonnets are all rosebuds. Srorrep and sprigzed muslin for summer. Wurre Dresses are embroidered all over the Waist and skirt. Terra Corra ribbon on black straw bonnets is very stylish. New Sasu ribbons have raised chenille flowers and leaves. New Ssurts are pleated in front and back, Dut not on the sides. Bats of colored wool are made use of to edge ffounces and basques. Carvep teak-wood is a favorite material for sticks for elegant parasols. Loxa Gioves are worn outside the sleeves half way up the elbow. Dark Green contrasted with sunflower yel- Jew is seen in spring bonnets. Tae woven Marguerite lace gloves will be ‘Worn with summer dresses. Buack GrenapINe over red, olive or yellow satin is used for new mantles. Dress Parasors have the entire top covered with artificial lowers. Maniia Hats, with velvet crowns, are well fitted for the first spring days. Intense colors and esthetic styles are avoided by fashionable women. Velvet Tasties and vests give a rich effect when combined with fine wool dresses. Dark Greex, ecru and terra-cotta are the prevailing-shades for bonnets and dresses. Few of the spring fashions are new; most of them are revivals of styles worn onlya few years ago. Tue OrentNes this week have been very fine. Washington stores are filled with the latest styles. Very little of the colored beads and irides- cent jets are among the latest novelties. Frixcrs are remarkably beautiful combina- Bations of jet, satin boules and Milan balls. Drop Frixces are seen in great profusion in the garniture of summer dresses. ‘Tue new styles in the buttons for dresses, ac- cording to Demorest, are very small. The large are for jackets. Tue sunflower and the lily are seen in printed dress fabrics, and in millinery ornaments, lace- pins, bangles and fancy buttons of enamel under crystal. Tue balayeuse of black or white lace will arain adorn summer costumes. Those, however, made of bright-colored silk or satin are utterly out of fashion. Inisu Batiste, in soft pale shades of color, as sky blue, Klac, shrimp pink, cream. ivory, fawn and corn eolor, will be among the list of popular summer tabrics. Wurre foulard night-dresses appear with shir- Ying over the shoulders and upon the sleeves, and are trimmed with Medici lace and bows of white satin ribbon. Harper's Bazar says: The French dresses are each supplied with a “pillow bustle,” which is a pad two or three fingers long and half as wide, sewed permanently to the belt of the skirt, in order to make the figure appear quite full Just below the waist line, where ,the Marsuerite cor- faze fits smoothly: the panier scarfs and TY give the proper ruilness below this. Hair of the lightest weizht should be used for these s, and they should be as small as possible, other- wise they are not only disfiguring but unwhole- some. A Paxistay novelty is the use of white can- vas with square meshes for dresses, and for trimming it, appliques of gay cretonne. A vine with flowers ts cut out of cretonne, and when @ewed to the canvas by chain stitching has the effect of fine embroidery. The cut-workimitat- ing Irish point and Florentine laces is added as farther trimming on these canvas costumes, and the whole is made up over a foundation of olive, bronze, green, or cardinal satin, and elaborately @rnamented with ribbon bows of the dark colors. For Srrinc and summer wear fancy silks will be in great demand. In taffetas, Louisine, glace, ehene, and other light silks, are found some Rovel and attractive patterns and combinations. These make inexpensive and dressy cos- tames which, with care, will last two seasons, especially if a thin lining is used in making them up. A pretty model for a seaside costume 4s made of fine shepherd's plaid silk in black and gold. Three kilted ruffles trim the underskirt. and the full panniers are edged with black lace. Long looped bows of black satin, faced with old gold, age added, and the visite is of the same mterial, trimmed around the bottom with two rutlles of lace. A zigzag fall of lace is arranged down each side of the visite in front, which is closed with tiny gold buttons. Ov tHe New York Fasurons it is sald: The fall-dress toilettes prepared at thisseason of the year are much simpler than those shown im the sutumn. For the mid-summer fetes at count: houses and watering-places short dresses will be worn exclusively: hence at the largest furnish- ing houses not one trained dress was exhibited im the gas-lighted room devoted to evening toilettes. Low corsages were also omitted, and the display consisted of many very bouffant short dresses of fine soft fabrics, with surplice or square neck and elbow sleeves. The cor- sazes fitted the ficure smoothly below the hips, and abundant draperies were arranged there. Most of these dresses were fastened in front by hooks and eye: very small buttons that were conceaied by lace frills, and their trimmings Were massed on the neck and arms, or if laid on the bodice, they were so smooth and flat that they added nothing to the apparent size; and in order to add to the look of slenderness these trimmings were brought into @ sharp point at the waist line or just below it. ———-_ +e-____ Hew She Does It. From Our Continent. When Friday comes all the neighbors sweep their parlors, and tt is really an interesting sight, because the methods are so uniform. First, Bridget appears with her head tied up in a dus- ter. She carries her broom in her hand. She Fests it against the table where the frailest bric- a-brae stands and then she opens the windows. She looks out a few moments and salutes her friends and notes the new dress of the lady next door. Then she takes the smaller articles and Piles them on the mantel. She covers the sofa with a sheet and then she begins to sweep. Her strokes are vizorous and good for the carpet trade, and a glance at the dust pan reveals the color of the carpet. Occasionally she stops and pes again from the window, and so gets a h of fresh air. She sweeps her dust into the entry and then she goes to the third story and begins there. She keeps a constantly-grow- ing plie of dust gay with the filaments of ‘wool, and this she finally sweeps down the stairs. She then opens operations on the seeond floor, and the pile grows larger, and it also goes down stairs and is united with the one from the par- Jor, and all together it is finally swept out the back door into a corner of the yard, and the wind takes charge of it. The house is now pretty well out of order, but im the parlor “the dust has settled.” and Brid- get returns to dust. This she does with vigor, and what does not adhere to the cloth settles on the carpet and fills the air. Then Bridget sets the chairs in place. pulls down the shades and the parlor is “cleaned.” She thea returns to the bedrooms, repeats the process of unsettling the dust, but the hands of the tamily take care Of the banisters as they go up and down. Now who would disturb this uniform and most cherished method?
