TOWSON, In debating the question as to where to hanv Mrs. Hayes’ portrait in the Executive Mansicn, some have urged that it would be contrary to pre- cedent to hang any portraits but those of George Washington and his wife in the East room, alleg- ing that none others have ever been there. This is an error as all who have lived in Washington over nine years will remember. Prior to tne re- pairs made in the White House in 1873, when the E.st room was remodeled, the portraits of eight Presidents hung there, and the portrait of Wash- ington hung tn the Red parlor. Its removal to the East room did not take place until within three years since, the companion portralt of Mar- tha Washington which was painted by Mr. An- Grews, in 1878, was taken there. The other por- traits were removed from the zast room ie Babcocx > Was then superintendent of ‘public tp idings and grounds said, the frames and size3 of all were so different that they did not look well hanging in the same room. It will be remembered that when Mrs. Hayes? trait was presented to President Gartield for the Executive Mansion on March bons 1881, while bis promises as to his own course in ga ard to the tottl abstinence question in the ‘white jouse were vague, his terms of acceptance ES were explicit. He said ecantig wo the dies of the Treniperance Union in response to Miss Willard in — room Mp the portrait was then ataber yi where the donors req itshould remain’ “1 shall be glad to have this icture on these’walls.” At the time no one ques- loned the right of the President of the United a portrait of a President’s wife for the adornment of the Executive, Mansion. There seems no Teason why the three portraits \t house of Presigent’s Sites “Martha Washington, Mrs. Tyler and Mrs Hayes should not be made'nucleus of a gallery there of portraits Of those who have presided as ladies of the White House.
