Fre Re EAE THE EVENING Tashinawes April 4, 1552 Editor. ‘The Evening Star has a regular, permanent. benn fae daily circulation more than treble that of any other daily paper published in Washington, and eauni te that of all the other daily papers bere added together. TUESDAY = STAR office is connected with the Telephone Ex- ehange. Advertisements, orders for the paper by mai and otherwise, news, or any information or business te sent day or night, free of charge. A Double-Sheet To.morrows ‘The continued encroachment of the extrordi- Mary spring advertising upon the reading space of THE Sran necessitates another double-sheet to-morrow. On Saturday last there were 200 new advertisements printed, being the largest number In any one day in the thirty-one years of the existence of the paper. The circulation of last Saturday's issue was 20,356 Advertisess will confer a favor by sending in their orders early. ‘The notorious bandit and train-robber, Jesse James, who has been a terror to Missouri and the Southwest since the close of the rebellion, was shot dead by one of his associates at’ St. Joseph, Mo., yesterday morning. The large rewards of fered by the state of Missourt for the body of Jesse James, “either dead or allve,” tempted the cuptd- ity of one of his confederates im erime named Ford. The latter, taking advantage of a moment ‘when James had disarmed himself preparatory to washing his hands, sent a builet through the head of the desperado. There 1s good reason to believe ‘that the killing of James will result in the break- ing-up of the gang of robbers he has headed. ‘He was the master-spirit of those lawless ruffians and had so successfully defied the law that they seemed to regard him as invincible. The manner Of his taking off will no doubt also have a discour- aging effect upon those of his gang who survive him. They will feel that they cannot trust each other, now that one of the band has assassinated ‘the chief for the sake of the blood-money. Ir the state can now convict Ford, the murderer of James, as an accomplice of the latter In his deeds of violence and bloodshed and send him to the gal- lows,or penitentiary for life, it will derive a double benefit from that one shot which killed James. A man who would shoot down aconfegerate in crime for the price set upon his head, would murder the traveller for the money in his pocket, and ts there- fore dangerous in any community. — An election will be held in Rhode Island to-mor- Tow for state officers and members of the legisla- ture. The prohibitionists, who have frequently, in past clections, put candiiates in the fleld, have not nominated any ticket this spring, and conse- quently the fight !s between the republicans and democrats, the latter, as usual, leading a forlorn ope. The republican candidate for governor is A. H. Littlefteld, who ts opposed on the democra- tie ticket by H. H. Kimball. The legislature to be elected will choose a U. S. Senator to succeed Mr. Anthony, whose term expires on the 4th of next March. The vote at the last general election stood: Republican, 10, democratic, 4,756; gTeenback and scattering, 596. The last legis! ture had a republican majority of 77 on joint bal- Jot, ina totai membership of 109. The republican majority in the next legislature may be somewhat Teduced, but nobody seems to anticipate any ma- terial change, and the indications point to the election of Senator Anthony as his own successor. A proposed amendment to the state constitution, which authorizes the legislature to order an elec- tion for delegates to a convention to revise the constitution will also be voted upon to-morrow. —e ‘The result of the municipal election in Cincin. natt yesterday 1s traced, by some, to the liquor Jaw enacted by the present legislature of Ohto. ‘That state has, for thirty years past, refused to tax drinking saloons, lest the imposition of the tax might be taken as a legal recognition of the “vile traffic.” The new law imposes a license of $300 a Year ypon each saloonor place where liquor is sold Dy the drink. ‘The retail venders have se long en- Joyed immunity from state taxation that they had Come to look upon ft as their right. ———_—_++. Baltimoreans are happy to-day in having to pay only five cents car-fare under the new law. The price for transfers is three cents. T= DEAD POET, Mr. MARSHALL'S Portrait in line of Mr. HENRY W. LONGFELLOW, recently competed, of which only one thousand copies will be offered for sale, EACH IMPRESSION SIGNED BY MR. LONGFELLOW, will be offered for Subscription in a few days.
