_ THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON CROSBY S. NOYVES............ - Editor. ‘The Evening Star bas a reautar, permanent. bona fiae daily cirenintion more than treble that of any other daily paper published in Washington, and equal to that of all the pers here added toaether. ‘Fux Stax office in connected with the Telephone Ex- eben Advertisements, orders for the paper by mai end otherwise, news, or any information or business an be sent day or nicht, free of charee. = == ‘The advocates of the glucose swin‘tle on the pub- Mic argue that, while another substance might be Preferred to that article by some people, its use should not be opposed any morethan the mann- facture of cider should be discouraged because Many persons prefer champagne wine to that Mquid as a beverage. Certainly not. But this As’nt the point. It ts when cider ts put up in bot” ties, labeled wine, and palmed off on the public as the pure juice of the grape that the case becomes parallel to that of glucose. It fs not to the manu- facture of the latter article, nor yet to its sale or use under the name of glucose, that objections are Interposed. The demand for legislation on the ubject comes in when glucose fs used as an adul- terating substance for sugar,—as a means of Bwindling the public, that ts, by increasing the ‘Weight of sugar without adding to its sweetness, Just as sand was formerly used by unscrupulous Bhop-keepers for the saine purpose. The objec- tions to it are based on precisely the same grounds against oleomargarine. Nobody eture or sile of that ar- @s those urged Opposes ‘the manuf: ticle under {ts proper name. It 1s to its sale, Mot as a substitute for butter, but as butter itself, that objection ts made. The claim set up for glu- ©ose that it is a chemically pure substance Is Yerth nothing. So 13 sand chemicadly pure, but It B not suzar. The fact that glucose is a trifle sweeter than ordinary clean sand, pound for pounds foes not help the matter any, elther in a moral potnt of view or so far as the pockets of innocent purchasers are concerned. They are paying for nething they do not get, and getting something Bhey do not want, in either case. But fs glucose a pure and perfectly harmless substance? That Is claimed for it by tts advocates, Dut it ts by no means generally conceded. In many tases, according to the judgment of intelligent persons, it Is more than a mere fraud; !t !s an act. Ive and dangerous poison. ‘The allegation Is made Bhat it is often not entirely separated from tue sulphuric acid involved, and that tn these in- stances it is highly fnjurious to the system. The disease 13 attributed by many the increasing use of glucos 4 may or may not be true; but 1t Increase of Bright's medical men ‘These allegat! fs not necessary to establish their truth tn order to Take ow ase inst the new adulterant. No- beds any loncer gets suzars, sirups, or confection- i eries that are perfectly pure or up to the old stand~ ards of sweetness. Glucose 's what 1s the matter, nd that is reason enough to condemn th ———__ «0+ A foretble argument In favor of the electric ight fs incidentally furnished by the result of Bome fnvestigations recentiy made by an eminent English professor into cau: of the frequency of | Bear-sightedness among students. His examina- tion satisied him that it ts not the hght so much as ‘the heat that 1s mainly coucerned in developing the prejuiciul effects. Heat ts radiated from the fame of the lamp or chimney, and is reflected from the shade and the surface of the paper. It immediately alters the hygrometric conditions of the surrounding air and dries the forehead, tem- ples and eyes. This view seems to be confirmed by the fact that temporary reilef from headache and pains in the eyes may be found tn bathing the af- fected organs with fresh water. Ordinary gas- burners and olllamps give out coushlerable amount of heat by the energetic consumption of the hydro-carbons, and hence their injurious ef- fects. In this respect the electric light Is not open ‘to the same objection, for although the light may ‘De as intense as desirable, still there is but very ttle heat produced. The great drawback to the general use of the latter In work requiring artl- fictal light 1s its disagreeable #ilickering which 1s Btilla very serious objection and one which Ina large degree offsets the advantages of a light ‘without heat. When this is overcome and a per- fect means devised for dividing the itht, as tn the case of gas or candles, the Invention may be re- garded as complete. After that it would scem to De only a question of cheapness to insure its suc- ces ++ Present appearances indicat® that the active efforts peing made to that end may really result In stopping the business of gambiing, which has Deen for many years past carried on so open!ty and 80 profitably In the little principality of Monaca The movement seems to be now pushed sytem- aticaliy by or in the Interest of relictous and Philantoropic organizttions tn England, France and Italy, although the charge ts made «yet the aid was concetved and started by the owners and Managers of the private clubs and “cercles” at Nice and other places of winter resort on the Riviera, who found that {22 superior attractions of Monte Carlo were interfering 7th the profits of ‘their own gaming establishments, Ii {s probable hat this ts s0, and if th> statement be true c8d ‘the raid proves successful, the case 15 likely to be apother of “the engineer holst with his own Petard.” Unquestionably the charms of Monte @arlo have had much to do with bringing winter ‘Visitors tothe neighboring places; and if gambling Deentirely suppressed there, tt will be found that the health-restoring qualities of that entire locality ‘Will suddenly lose their efileacy. It isn’t so much Pursuit of health as an opportunity to indulge in Foulette and mente et quarante under a @prroundings, that takes people to Nie (ther places in the delightful neighborhood, ‘The practice occasionally ind holding from the pages of tue Cungresstonal Re- Cord a portion of the actual proceedings of either House 1s one that cannot be justified, no matter how many interested gentlemen may desire it or agree to it, nor how many speakersor ex-speakers May approve it.
