The funeral will be a private one. ag A WorkingMen’s Demonstration. SERENADES TO GEN. GRANT AND OTHERS. In response to a call for an assembly of working- men to pay respects to Gen. Grant,about 200 gath- ered in the neighborhood of 1st street and Penn- sylvanla avenue last evening, where they were marshalled by Messrs. Richard Emmons, T. F. Russell, George Brennan, and William Hardester. The line, headest by the 21 artiilery band, marched up Pennsylvania avenue, receiving constant acces- sions as it passed along, “arriving at the restdence of Gen. Beale, on Lafayette square, where Gen. Grant was spending the evening. GEN. GRANT'S REMARKS. Gen. Grant appeared upon the portico, in re- spone to the music. He spoke with his accus- tomed brevity, saying:—“I am deepy grateful for the compliment you pay me. convince General Beale, with Whom Tam dining, that thts demonstration was intended in his honor, but his modesty prevented him from accepting my Statement. In his name, and in the names of the other guste, I thank you’ for this honor, and I ain only sorry that I did not know of your intentions, as then T'should have been prepared to express my: self more at length.” Mr. Emmons inade ashort address, explaining that the demonstration was made in honor of the man who, when chief magistrate, hal executed the laws thtended for the relief of Workingmen.
