Lewis, who had been em- ployed at the smallpox hospital as a carpenter in change of the fitting up of that structure for the reception of inmates. Mr. Lewis made application for this position, having had the smallpox avout ten years ago, his face showing unmistakably the marks of the disease. Mr. Entwisle, the bullding inspector, recommended to the Comuisstoners that good pay be given him, as it was a disagreeable duty to among the kK patients, and he would have to be almost isolated from his family. The price pald him was- $6 per day, and a new sult of clothing when he left there. Mr. Lewis remained there twenty days, and, feeiing unwell,went to his home, at 8th and O streets, on the 18th instant.
