WHO OWNS THE GEORGRTOWN STREETS. Yesterday afternoon, in response to a note from the House District committee as to whether the fee coy ee of a portion of Rock street, Georgetow! In reference to the bill forthe extension of the Belt Une railroad, which has been sent to the Dis- trict Commisstoners for comment, Engineer Com- missioner Twining reports that such amendments should be made as will prevent the new tramway from cutting directly across the square formed by the intersection of Louisiana and Obio avenues, which space is reserved fara general marxet for the sale of certiin specttied products tn bulk. He adds: “I earnestly urge that no privilege should be granted to this company until they shall have conformed to the requirements of the Commission- ers in regard to their tracks. ‘Their condition has been such as to cause a nuisance upon the streets which they occupy, and it bas been my intention to recommend to the board that the work of re- paving thelr roadways be let by public advertise— ment to the lowest bidder, and certificates issued against the property of the road. The company has torn up the north end of 11th street without ing their tracks, leaging the street In an abom- inable condition. { hold that such conduct, hold- ing a valuable franchise, should debar {t from favorabie consideration until the cause of com- plaint shall have been removed.” ANOTHER CABE OF SMULLPOX was reported at the health office this gnorning. A man named Jacob Newinan, {n the alley between ith and 12th and Maryland avenue and E street southwest. He will be removed to the hospital to- day. Every precaution has been taken. It Is the opinion of the health officer that the four cases, of which this fs the last, all are the result of the case which came to the notice of the department only after death in Draper's alley. He is confident of his abiity to stamp it out as soon as all the cases which are Mable to result from iufection in the case named have coine to his notice and the period after which others are liable to result has passed. The letter is from Commander Coghlan, now in California, and the sequel from John Carr Moody, Esq., of the same state, and areeminently worthy of careful perusal and serious consideration, THE LETTER. VU. 8. Navy Yarn, Maze Isianp, Cat., December 16th, 1881. Sms:—An enforced residerce of two years in thie abominable climate of California made me the subject of most painful attacks of rheumatism, during which I was totally unable to perform the arduous duties of my ofhce. Consultation upon my case by eminent naval and other surgeons failed to afford me the slightest re~ lief, and my distress was much aggravated by the fact that my physical disability would result, under the law. in my retirement from active service, on the eve of my Promotion to the grade of Commander. At this period Dr. Hoyle, a friend of mine, recommended to me St. Jacob's Oil, the happy result of the use of which has constrained me, in my deep gratitnde, to hereby ac- Knowledie the complete and wonderful cure it has wrought in my case. Tam sincerely yours, J. B. Coautas, U. 8. N. ‘THE SEQUEL. No. 5 Law Buriprvas, VaLieso, Savona County, Cat., Sanuary 13, 1882. GENTLEMEN:—The publication in the Army and Navy Journat, of a commendatory notice of St. Jacoba | FURNITURE CRETO: Oil, from the pen of my old and valued friend, Captain Coghlan, of the Navy, now on duty here, reminds me of an unfulfilled task, which it isa pleasure for me to complete. A sufferer for seven years from a cruel joint trouble, pronounced by some practitioners gout, and by others rheumatism, but distressingly painful under any name,—I was elowly making my way, with my crutch, to the court-room, when I was sccosted by Cap- tain Coghlan, who kindly gave me his arm. He fur- nished me with an account of how his well-known suf- ferings were alleviated by the use of the Oil, and with his usual persistent energy, insisted on cending me some which he had. Doubtingly enough, I applied it accord- ing to directions, and tne relief within a reasonable time Was such as to make me almost disregard the evidence of my own senses. When one has been plagued #0 long— grown gray with pain~and exhausted purse, patience, and pharmacy in secking relief, incredulity is reasona- bly prominent,—and blamelessly so. But after contin- uous use of the remedy, Iam constrained to say, with especial reference to its therapeutic value, ‘post hoc, ergo propter hoc”:—and to congratulate myself, and my family specially, and the hwnan race generally.
