BROWN CHEMI ‘The Christmas Markets. ADVANCE IN THE PRICE OF POULTRY. The markets to-day are crowded, and present a busy appearance. The majority of buyers are of course looking for ‘the Christmas bird,” and those who put off providing it until to-day are regretting it, as turkeys took quite a jump this morning—the ruling rate yesterday not be- ing over 15 cents and 18 cents per pound, while to-day they bring 20 cents per pound, witha tendency upward. While the weather is now favorable to keeping them over, the demand ts also greater than for years past, with a supply. estimated by wholesale men, as not more than adequate to the demand. The increased demand is caused, some say, by many purchasers buying two turkeys instead of ‘one, for as both Sunday and Monday will be observed, a whole turkey will generally be required for each da: Most of theturkeys now on retail were boug! wholesale, at #15 to #17 per hundred weight. The prices of otiver poultry are but a trifle above those of the early part of the week, although a rise is looked for before the close of the day The necessary ‘‘fixins” for the Christmas table have not risen in price. celery selling for 5a8 cents per bunch, and cranberries at 15 cents per quart. ‘The butchers are rather pleased at the ah en for a further advance of turkey meat, for they argue that many will substitute beef, &c., forthe nsual fowl. There are around the markets a great quantity of evergreens in the way of trees and ornaments of wreaths, crosses, &e., but not such a forest of it as has been seen on former occasions, when much of it was left over. AN ATTEMPTED E. ENT Case.—Mr.George W. Driver states that great injustice was done him in the paragraph in Thursday's Star headed “Asking for an oyster and getting a clubbing. The man Leonard who testitied in the Police Court that he was assaulted by Heister, bar- keeper at Driver's restaurant, it appears abused the latter shamefully and the assault simply con- sisted in an effort to put him out of the place. Judge Snell said (as stated in Thursday's Sar) that he was satisfled that Jgonara had acted im- properly but as Mr. Heiser did not eject him, according to law, he should have to impose a fine, which was merely nominal, and without costs.
