THE WOMEN SUFFRAGE QUESTION. Upon the conclusion of morning business in the Senate, Mr. Hoar’s resolution for acommittee compen: hal reve- jority vote, and Its discussion continued with- out action. Mr. Hoar said as it did not involve the ques- tion of women suffrage, but merely the cony nience of delegations desiring to have a hear- ing on the question, he hoped a vote would be reached to-day. Mr. Morgan addressed the Senate. He re- garded the proposition as the initial measure of that series which had been urged upon states and territories, and Congress in various forms, by which it was sought to open to the intrusion of politics and politicians that sacred circle of the family, where no one should be permitted to intrude without the consent of both of the heads of the family. TARIFF BILL. ‘Senator Morrill’s tariff commission bill, which the Senate finance committee decided to- day to report without amendment, provides for th pointment of nine commissioners from civil life by the President of the J'nited States, subject to confirmation by the Senate, and pre- scribes their duties as follows: It shall be the duty of said commission to take into con- sideration, and to thoroughly investigate, all the various questions relating to | the agricultural, commercial, mercantile, manu- facturing, mining aud industrial interests of the United States so faras the same may be neces- sary to the establishment of a judicions tariff, or a revision of the existing tariff and the ex- isting system of internal revenue laws upon a scale of justice to all interests and for the purpose of fully examining the matters which may come before it; said commission in the _ prosecution of its Inquiries is empowered to visit such dif- report to Congress the results of their investi- gation and the testimony taken in the course of the same from time to time, and are required to make their final report not later than the first Monday in January, 1883.
